BERKELEY – A late night in San Francisco became an all-around shootout on the pitch as California visited USF Sunday evening.
Within the opening 20 minutes of play, a combined four goals were scored but the Golden Bears (4-0-0) outlasted the Dons (1-7-0) on a game-winner in the 82nd minute from
Shinya Kadono to triumph 3-2 at Negoesco Stadium.
Kadono recorded his first goal of the night in the 11th minute to extend the Bears lead to 2-1. But the Dons answered back with their second equalizer at the 18:18 mark, to knot things at 2-2.
Things remained tied up heading into intermission, but after the break Cal stayed aggressive to finish the night with five shots-on-goal and go undefeated through the weekend.
Cal jumped on the board almost immediately, with
Jose Carrera-Garcia chipping in a penalty kick at the 48-second mark that USF's goalkeeper misread allowing the score.
The Dons responded with an equalizer in the fifth minute to counter and finished with eight shots-on-goal.
Goalkeeper
Drake Callender picked up his fourth win of the season in the net and finished with six saves.
"We had to battle a very good USF team tonight, along with the fans and other elements," said head coach
Kevin Grimes. "It was a really exciting match as we had contributions from many players. Shinya had some clutch finishes tonight and that was really special to see."
Kadono's career-best two-score performance tops the team with three goals, also a single-season career high. He also found the net in Cal's victory at Portland a week ago.
Cal's win extends the series to 12-2-1 and marks the 10th consecutive victory against the Dons.
The Bears host Santa Clara (0-7-0) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. (PT) in their final nonconference battle and third matchup against a West Coast Conference opponent.
