LOS ANGELES – A late night battle ended brightly for California as it opened Pac-12 play with a 2-0 shutout at UCLA and tabbed its fifth consecutive win of the season. The win marked the first time the Golden Bears have kept the Bruins scoreless since a 1-0 victory in 2014, also at Drake Stadium.
Cal's scoring leader
Shinya Kadono tabbed his fourth goal of the season to provide the final margin with a header set up by freshman Chris Grey in the 57th minute.
Kadono is one of three Cal player's with at least two goals so far this season (
Paul Salcedo-Borrego, 3 and
Jose Carrera-Garcia, 2).
Thursday, the Bears jumped on the board in the 13th minute with Sam Ebstein hauling in his first goal of the season with an assist from Josh Morton to move ahead 1-0. Morton led the charge with a strike deflected by UCLA goalkeeper Kevin Silva, when Ebstein slipped behind the keeper and closed the deal.
Drake Callender continued to impress delivering his third shutout of the season, recording six saves on the night.
