SEATTLE, Wash. – Redshirt freshman McKay Johnson set the school record in the shot put and newcomers shined for the California men's and women's track and field teams on day two of the UW Invitational at Dempsey Indoor.

The Bears notched three event wins by Lauren Martinez and newcomers Noelle Schiller and Tuomas Kaukolahti. Kaukolahti recorded another third place finish as he accounted for two of Cal's 11 top-five finishes against quality competition from the western region.

Johnson set the indoor school record in the shot put with a throw of 64-5.25. Johnson set the school's freshman record during outdoor season last year. He surpassed Peter Simon's mark of 62-7.75 in 2016. Simon also would have set a new mark with his throw in Saturday's competition. Simon recorded a throw of 62-9.50 on his fifth attempt, only to have Johnson set a new record on his next throw.

Noelle Schiller claimed the crown in her first career collegiate competition. The freshman from Westlake Village, California defeated a talented field with a jump of 19-7.00, which tied for the seventh-best indoor mark in school history. Isabella Marten notched a third place finish with a jump of 19-1.25 while Ashley Anderson took ninth and Windy Margerum finished 12th.

In his first meet, Tuomas Kaukolahti won the triple jump competition with a leap of 52-2.50 on his final jump. He had already won the competition, but elected to jump again and recorded the sixth-best mark in the NCAA this year. He also notched the third-best jump in school history. This was after Kaukolahti claimed the first section of the long jump and tied for third overall with a leap of 23-10.0. That mark placed ninth all-time in Cal indoor history. Jared Geredes took sixth place in the long jump competition with a personal best mark of 23-3.5.

Junior Lauren Martinez earned the Bears' third victory of the day and fourth of the meet as she claimed the pole vault crown with a clearance of 13-4.50. Ashley Anderson claimed a second place finish in the triple jump with a top leap of 41-10.0 on her second jump.

Another Cal newcomer, Silviu Bocancea, took third place in the weight throw as he recorded the seventh-best throw in school history. Bocancea set a personal best with his fifth throw as he launched the weight 60-10.00. That throw bumped him to the top three. Malik McMorris recorded a top throw of 52-6.50 to finish second in his flight and 11th overall.

The Bears' 1-2 punch in the 60-meter hurdles proved effective as they finished as the top two collegians in the race. Ashtyn Davis took third with a time of 7.91 while Misana Viltz claimed fifth with a mark of 8.04. Davis sits in third in the school's all-time list while Viltz moved into seventh. The duo finished behind Aleec Harris, the 2015 Indoor National Champion in the 60m hurdles and Siddhanth Thingalaya who competed in the 2017 World Championship for India.

Jayla Scholis and Jackie Patterson elevated their game throughout the morning as they were just two of four athletes to qualify for the final after running in the qualifying heats. Scholis took fourth (7.71) and Patterson took fifth (7.72) in the qualifying heats. They followed that by bettering their marks in the prelims. Scholis ran 7.66 and Patterson finished in 7.68 seconds. Patterson took eighth in the final with a time of 7.69. Scholis finished in ninth after pulling up with an injury on the final stretch.

In the women's mile, Brie Oakley and Jordyn Colter compiled the fifth and sixth fastest indoor times in school history. Oakley took eighth overall with a time of 4:44.67, while Colter finished second in her heat and 11th overall with a time of 4:46.58. In addition to Colter, two other Bear finishers took second in their section as Annie Boos was second in the fourth section and Chloe Hansel took second in the second section.

Nikolaus Moore overcame a late deficit and pulled away over the final 100m to win his section the first section of the 800m and finish in 16th place overall. Jack Phillips won his flight of the high jump with a clearance of 6-10.75, which places him eighth in school history in the indoor high jump.

A trio of freshman started the day for Cal in the women's 60m hurdle qualifying. Deshae Wise earned qualification into the prelims by posting the 11th fastest time as she crossed the line in 9.01 to take second in the first heat. Wise finished 19th in the prelims. Margerum took 22nd in 9.26 and Schantell Williams took 25th in 9.31 seconds.

On the first day of the UW Invitational the Bears produced six top-five finishes and had six people set personal bests. Bethan Knights won the 5K with the second-fastest time in school at 15:45.95. Camryn Rogers posted the fourth-best weight throw in school history at 65-6.25 as she took second and Destiny Parker finished third. Paramveer Chohan finished third in the men's 200m with at time of 21.99, which was only bested by two Olympians.

The Bears will return to Seattle in two weeks for the Husky Classic on February 9-10 at Dempsey Indoor.
