SEATTLE – Junior
Noah Texter made 10 saves in his second career start but the Cal men's soccer team fell to Washington 1-0 on a penalty kick in the second overtime on Thursday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Texter, starting place of injured goalie
Drake Callender, helped turn back an efficient Huskies attack that reeled off 19 shots, including 11 shots on goal. A handful of Texter's saves were of the spectacular variety, stopping high-quality chances by Washington.
Texter, who replaced Callender in the second half of last Sunday's loss to Stanford, played a career-high 104 minutes. The only other match in his career in which he saw significant playing time before Sunday came last season against Santa Clara, when he appeared in his only game of the year and played the full 90 minutes.
Washington won it in the 104th minute when senior Scott Menzies found the right corner of the goal on a penalty kick.
The Bears (5-5-2) managed just four shots against the Huskies, but one of them could have given them the win in regulation. In the 31
st minute, senior
Sam Ebstein gathered a loose ball after a Washington turnover and fed it to leading scorer
Shinya Kadono as he was streaking toward the box. But Kadono's shot was turned away on a brilliant save by Washington goalie Saif Kerawala.
Ebstein and freshman
Alonzo Del Mundo also had quality shots that were saved.
Cal will remain on the road through the weekend and visit Oregon State on Sunday at 1 p.m. on the Pac-12 Networks. The Beavers upset No. 10 Stanford on Thursday night in Covallis.
