Late Goals Doom Bears Against Oregon St.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Senior Shinya Kadono scored his Pac-12 leading 11th goal of the season but the Oregon State men's soccer team recorded two late goals to beat the Bears 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field.

Kadono, who also entered the week tied for sixth in the country in goals, got Cal (5-6-2, 1-4 Pac-12) on the scoresheet first after making a steal in the backline and punching it past Oregon State goalie Adrian Fernandez. The Bears had a handful of other good scoring chances in the first half, including a pair of shots by redshirt freshman Lucas Churchill, and led 1-0 at halftime.

The Beavers, coming off a 1-0 upset of No. 10 Stanford on Thursday, dominated possession for most of the second half. But junior Noah Texter, making his second consecutive start in place of injured Drake Callender, once again was terrific in goal. He faced 17 Oregon State shots, and one sequence made back-to-back spectacular saves in which he one-handed away an initial shot, scrambled back to his feet and immediately stopped another.

Oregon State's pressure finally proved to be too much late in the game. The Beavers tied it at 1-1 with a goal in the 77th minute and took the lead in the 87th minute.

Cal had a couple of solid scoring opportunities in the second half, one coming on a heel flip shot by senior Sam Ebstein off a cross by Kadono, and then Kadono's header in the 89th minute was saved by Hernandez.

The Bears finished with six shots, including three by Kadono. In addition to goals, Kadonno leads the Pac-12 with 24 points and 46 shots.

Cal returns to Berkeley next week to close out its home portion of the schedule. The Bears host Washington on Thursday and Oregon State on Sunday. Thursday's match will air on the Pac-12 Networks, and Sunday's contest will serve as Senior Day.
