STANFORD, Calif. - Day two of the MPSF Invitational hosted by Stanford offered a mixed bag for the Cal men's water polo team as the No. 4-ranked Bears earned a 19-8 victory over No. 5 UC Santa Barbara and dropped a 13-6 decision to No. 3 USC at Avery Aquatic Center.

With Saturday's results, Cal (14-2) will play for third place on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bears will face either No. 1 Stanford or No. 2 UCLA.

Cal 19, UC Santa Barbara 8
A fast start got the Bears rolling early and a 12-3 halftime advantage was more than enough to carry Cal to a victory over the Gauchos.

Four different Bears helped build a 5-1 lead after one period as Johnny Hooper scored twice and Spencer Farrar, Joe Molina and Jordan Hoover also put their names on the scoresheet with a goal apiece. Farrar took over in the second period, scoring three goals to lead a Cal attack that outscored UCSB 7-2 heading into halftime.

UC Santa Barbara got its offense going in the third period, outscoring the Bears 4-3 over the eight-minute stretch, but Cal rebounded in the fourth to outscore the Gauchos 3-1 in the final period.

Farrar and Hooper tied for team-high honors in scoring with four goals each. Safak Simsek and Jack Deely scored two apiece while Vassilis Tzavaras, Molina, Marko Valecic, Hoover and Chase Hamming all added one. Bernardo Carelli and Spencer Tagg split time in the cage and combined for eight saves.

USC 13, Cal 6
A two-goal match at halftime turned in USC's favor in the second half as the Bears couldn't quite pull in front against their foes from Southern California.

First period goals from Farrar and Simsek kept Cal within a goal after one period and Simsek scored three more times in the second as the Bears trailed 7-5 at halftime.

USC widened its advantage in the third period, taking an 11-6 lead, and Cal could only score once more in the final period as its comeback attempt fell short. Hooper scored the Bears' lone goal in the third while Nikos Delagrammatikas scored in the fourth.
