BERKELEY – Senior
Shinya Kadono moved into fifth place on Cal's all-time single-season scoring list with his 12
th goal of the season but the Cal men's soccer team fell to Washington 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
Kadono extended his Pac-12 lead in goals in the 65
th minute, punching a shot past Washington goalie Bryce Logan after an initial header by
Alonzo Del Mundo was blocked. Sophomore
Christopher Grey corralled the loose ball and set up Kadono for the score.
Kadono's goal cut the Huskies' advantage to 2-1 but the Bears (5-7-2, 1-5 Pac-12) couldn't find the equalizer.
Washington scored the only goal of the first half and then extended the advantage to 2-0 in the 61
st minute. Kadono scored four minutes later to cut the lead in half.
Junior goalie
Noah Texter continued his strong play since taking over for injured starter
Drake Callender, recording six saves and taking control in the box for most of the afternoon. Texter faced 19 Washington shots for the second week in a row. The Huskies had 19 shots against the Bears last Thursday in Seattle when Texter registered 10 saves – the most in a match by a Pac-12 goalie this season.
Despite having made just three starts, Texter's 19 saves for the season rank fifth in the Pac-12.
In addition to leading in goals, Kadono also paces the Pac-12 with 26 points and 48 shots.
The Bears will play their final home match of the season Sunday against Oregon State at 3 p.m. Cal will honor Kadono and fellow seniors
Sam Ebstein,
Sam Junqua,
Halil Beqaj and
Spencer Held in a special pre-match ceremony.
