BERKELEY - Despite dominating possession and amassing significantly more high-percentage scoring opportunities, the Cal men's soccer fell 1-0 in overtime to Oregon State on Sunday.
Cal (5-8-2, 1-6 Pac-12) outshot the Beavers 13-8 and had a handful of excellent opportunities in front of the OSU goal, but couldn't finish any of them off for a score.
The Bears created a lot of traffic in the box after crosses from the corner and were just a bit off on timed runs for shots or second balls off of blocks or rebounds. Junior
Simon Lekressner and redshirt freshman
Lucas Churchill each had two strong scoring opportunities in the second half but weren't able to capitalize.
Lekressner led the Bears with four shots while Churchill and Pac-12 shots leader
Shinya Kadono had two apiece.
Sunday marked the final home match of the season for the Bears, and Cal honored Kadono and fellow seniors
Sam Ebstein,
Sam Junqua,
Halil Beqaj and
Spencer Held in a special pre-match ceremony at Edwards Stadium as they played in their final match in Berkeley.
Junqua was almost in on two goals, feeding redshirt freshman
Alonzo Del Mundo for a shot that went just wide in the first half and then narrowly missing on his own shot in the second half off a cross from sophomore
Francisco Perez from the right corner.
The Bears' best chance to score came in the 83
rd minute when Lekressner's shot in the box was blocked and Churchill tried to clean up the rebound but his shot was also turned away.
The Beavers won it on a goal by Alex Cover in the second minute of overtime.
With the home portion of its schedule complete, Cal now has next weekend off before going on the road to play UCLA on Nov. 1. The Bears will close out the season with three consecutive matches on the road.
