Late Goal Lifts UCLA Past Bears

LOS ANGELES – Goalie Noah Texter made seven saves – including one on a penalty kick – but the Cal men's soccer team fell to UCLA 1-0 on Thursday evening at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

Texter, who has been sharing time recently with injured All-Pac-12 goalie Drake Callender, made his fourth start of the season and turned in another strong performance against the Bruins. He has made at least seven saves in three of his appearances while facing a high volume of shots each time.

Texter set the tone for his performance early on when he made a diving save on a penalty kick attempt by UCLA's Matt Hundley.

UCLA outshot the Bears (5-9-2, 1-7 Pac-12) 18-12, but Cal still had a handful of strong scoring opportunities. Leading scorer Shinya Kadono had a team-high three shots, including a header that hit the crossbar in the 66th minute after a nice feed from defender Sam Junqua following a corner kick. Junqua, Tommy Williamson and Taylor Davila each had two shots, with Williamson missing wide in the 80th minute.

Freshman Stefan Jung also had a header that was saved by UCLA goalie Justin Garces in the 89th minute.

Kadono entered the game leading the Pac-12 with 12 goals and 26 points while ranking third in shots. Texter, despite having made only three starts and appearing in five total matches before Thursday, still ranked seventh in the conference in saves.

Freshman Jonathan Estrada made his first career start for the Bears and registered one shot in 80 minutes of play.

Cal will continue its Southern California road trip Sunday when it travels to face San Diego State at 4:30 p.m.
