EUGENE, Oregon – After an inspired second-half effort that saw two goals in the span of five minutes, the Cal women's soccer team is headed back to Berkeley with a win. Sophomore striker
Emma Westin tied the match in 74
th minute and redshirt junior
Anja Koehler provided the game-winner just minutes later to give the Golden Bears (5-7-1, 1-4-0 Pac-12) their first win of the conference campaign. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Bears, who handed the Ducks (7-5-1, 2-3-0 Pac-12) just their second home loss of the year.
After finding themselves on the wrong side of a 2-1 score line Thursday night against Oregon State, the Bears showed their resolve on Sunday, battling back for the victory over the Ducks.
"This entire weekend, our girls fought really hard," said Cal head coach
Neil McGuire. "Oregon State and Oregon are two very good teams and our players responded with intensity and found a way to win, which we hadn't been able to do thus far in Pac-12 conference. I'm really happy for our players and really happy for the program."
Looking to rebound from a 2-1 loss Thursday night at Oregon State, the Bears found themselves facing an early deficit as the hosts were able to capitalize on an early mistake in the box. The Ducks put together a dangerous attack near the top of the 18-yard-box in the seventh minute. Cal's defense was able to cut out the intended pass, but the ball bounced around, eventually falling to Bruner outside the six-yard box. The senior striker one-timed her shot past Cal goalkeeper
Olivia Sekany for her second goal of the season.
The Ducks nearly doubled their lead in the 14
th minute when the Ducks earned a corner. Oregon's Jazmin Jackmon got a header off that was headed to the back post, but sophomore
Caroline Clark was there to head it off the goal line. Just minutes later Oregon striker Eden Hardy got through on goal, but Sekany charged off her line well and was able to make a kick saved to deny the Ducks.
Sekany finished the game with four saves, matching her career-high, while redshirt senior Halla Hinriksdottir made one save for Oregon.
After a slow start to the match, Cal's offense started to find its footing midway through the first half. Clark saw a shot attempt rattle off the cross bar in the 26
th minute, while junior
Abi Kim appeared to have scored off a header in the 39
th minute, but the goal was called back due to a foul.
The Ducks carried their 1-0 lead into the second half, which saw both times struggle to establish their rhythm in the opening stages. However the Bears were finally able to break through in the 74
th minute, when Westin tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the year. After an impressive build up through the middle of the pitch, sophomore midfield
Luca Deza took a shot that deflected off a Ducks defender. The rebound fell to Westin, who rifled her shot into the upper 90. Deza, who scored Thursday against the Beavers, was credited with the assist on the play.
Less than five minutes later the Bears took the lead for good on Koehler's first goal of the season. Westin played a corner kick into the area and the 5'10" captain elevated to win the header, powering it into the back of the net.
The Bears held the Ducks off in the waning minutes of the match to snap to cap the weekend with a win.
Cal will be back in action on Saturday, October 13, squaring off against Arizona on the road.
