Mid-Week Play Takes Bears Across The Bay
BERKELEY - A weekend sweep of Brown kept momentum squarely in the Cal baseball team's corner and the Bears will look to continue that roll with more non-conference action as they head across the Bay Bridge to take on San Francisco on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Benedetti Diamond and live updates can be found by following the Cal baseball team on Twitter (@CalBaseball).
Three close wins demonstrated Cal's resilience throughout the Brown series as the Golden Bears had to produce late in games, both at the plate and on the mound, to beat their visitors from Rhode Island. Home runs by
Andrew Vaughn and
Korey Lee made the difference in Friday's 10-9 win,
Darren Baker provided a walk-off blast in a 4-3 victory on Saturday and
Tyrus Greene's two-run shot in the eighth inning of Sunday's game paved the way for a 7-6 victory that clinched the series sweep. Vaughn earned Pac-12 Player of the Week honors after going 7 for 15 with one double, four home runs, eight runs scored and 11 RBIs in Cal's five wins. He also walked four times, was hit by a pitch four times and stole a base.
Big performances weren't limited to the Cal offense. Five Golden Bear relivers -
Arman Sabouri,
Zayne Patino,
Joey Matulovich,
Tanner Dodson,
Andrew Buckley and
Erik Martinez - combined to throw 16 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run. Sabouri delivered one of the weekend's highlights, tossing five innings of scoreless relief in Saturday's 4-3 win.
PROBABLE STARTERS

Rogelio Reyes (1-1, 7.02 ERA)
San Francisco: LHP Haydn King (0-0, 8.10)
LAST TIME OUT
- A highly competitive weekend of baseball in Berkeley was also an enjoyable stretch of play for the Golden Bears as they notched wins of 11-6, 10-9, 4-3 and 7-6 over the Brown Bears. With the weekend sweep, Cal improved to 9-0 at home in 2018.
- When the going got tough against Brown, Cal was able to turn to its power supply in big situations. Late home runs by Andrew Vaughn and Korey Lee made the difference in a 10-9 win, Darren Baker hit a walk-off homer in a 4-3 victory and Tyrus Greene delivered the game-winning two-run shot in the eighth inning of Sunday's 7-6 win.
- Cal continues to rank as one of the nation's top offensive teams as it prepares for Pac-12 play. The Bears rank ninth in the country in team batting average (.327), sixth in scoring (9.1 runs/game), seventh in slugging percentage (.519) and ninth in home runs per game (1.53) entering Tuesday's game.Â
- On the mound, Cal continues to receive contributions from a host of players, as evidenced by the Bears' approach to last Tuesday's win over Xavier. Eight different pitchers toed the slab in a 13-3 win over Xavier, led by a two-inning start by right-hander Aaron Shortridge. He earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings.
SCOUTING THE DONS
Series Record: Cal leads 122-44
Last Meeting: The Bears and Dons split a pair of meetings in 2017 with San Francisco earning a 7-3 win at Benedetti Diamond and Cal winning 1-0 at Evans Diamond. In the 1-0 victory, six pitchers -
Arman Sabouri,
Aaron Shortridge,
Zayne Patino,
Andrew Buckley,
Tanner Dodson and
Erik Martinez - combined to throw a three-hit shutout and
Matt Ruff drove in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI single in the seventh inning.
San Francisco's 2018 Record: 9-6
- The Dons enter mid-week play fresh off a series win over the same team, Xavier, that Cal beat in the mid-week last week. The Musketeers took Thursday's contest but San Francisco bounced back for an 8-2 win on Friday and wins of 8-5 and 1-0 on Saturday.
- Jonathan Allen has emerged early in the season as USF's top option at the plate and he carries a .365 batting average with eight doubles, one home run, one triple and 10 RBI into play this week. Rile Helland (.321) and Michael Perri (.310) also check in with averages north of .300.
- USF owns a team ERA of 3.65 entering Tuesday's game and Brendan Jenkins returns this season as the Dons' top option out of the bullpen. He owns a 1-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and two saves in 13.1 innings pitched so far this season.
