TEMPE, Ariz. - Behind four-goal performances from
Parker Garrett and
Kirsten Swanson, as well as 10 saves from
Jenny Wilkens, the California women's lacrosse team defeated Arizona State, 17-13, Sunday afternoon. Swanson paced the Golden Bears with seven points on the day, a career high.
The Golden Bears improved to 5-8, 1-6, on the season and the victory also marked the first-ever Pac-12 Conference win for the Bears.
"A huge accomplishment for our program," head coach
Brooke Eubanks said. "Not only to get our first conference win of the year, but also our first-ever Pac-12 Conference victory. This win is a great moment to propel us through the rest of our conference games. The offense played a consistent 60 minutes, and we were able to keep our composure when ASU came back."
Along with the four goals from Garrett and Swanson,
Eliza Christman posted a hat trick. Garrett also added an assist to give her five points on the day, while
Nikki Zaccaro registered two goals and two assists.
The Cal offense boasted a total of eight different goal scorers on Sunday as
Lauren Hickman,
Chloe Landry,
Marina Smith and
Ashley Ward also found the back of the net for the Bears.
Meredith Haggerty and
Elizabeth Koehler once again led the charge on defense. Haggerty scooped up six draws along with a caused turnover, while Koehler amassed four draws, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Haggerty now ranks tied for third in school history in career draws with 125 and she ranks fourth in school history in career caused turnovers with 58. Koehler is one caused turnover shy of Cal's career list, while her 114 career draws rank seventh in school history.
Wilkens earned her 17th career double-digit save performance. Her 110 career ground balls rank third all-time in school history, seven shy of second.
Committed to snapping its six-game losing streak since beginning conference play, the Bears came charging out of the gates to start the game, scoring four of the first five goals of the contest. After the Sun Devils made it 4-2, Cal rattled off six unanswered tallies to take a 10-2 into halftime. Garrett scored three straight times during that stretch. Three of her four goals on the day came on converted free-position shots.
ASU fought back after the break, scoring three of the first four goals in the second half. After Cal pushed its lead back to eight at 13-5, the Sun Devils netted five in a row to make it 13-10 halfway through the second half.
The Cal offense was too much for ASU to handle, though, and the Bears never let ASU get any closer than three goals and held on for the win.
Now with its first Pac-12 win under its belt, Cal will play the final four games of the regular season in Berkeley. The Bears will begin the four-game homestand against Fresno State on Friday, April 6, at 7 p.m. from California Memorial Stadium.
