Fresno State Escapes Berkeley With 14-13 Win

BERKELEY - Despite a late second-half surge, the California women's lacrosse team's comeback effort fell short against Fresno State Friday night at California Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs defeated the Golden Bears, 14-13.

Cal fell to 5-9 on the season.

Eliza Christman led the way for the Bears with four points on three goals and an assist. All three of her goals came on successful free-position shot attempts. Caroline Corzel also notched a hat trick, and Kirsten Swanson posted three points on two goals and an assist. Cal boasted seven different goal scorers in the contest. Nikki Zaccaro collected three assists.

Defensively, Elizabeth Koehler scooped a career-high nine draws, while Kendall Swenson secured a personal-best five ground balls. Meredith Haggerty was all over the field, scoring a goal, garnering four ground balls, collecting two ground balls and causing a turnover. In addition to her six saves, Jenny Wilkens picked up four ground balls.

Cal jumped out to an early 3-0 lead at the outset of the contest before the Bears and the Bulldogs traded goals throughout the rest of the half. The Bears went into the halftime break with a 7-4 lead.

The turning point of the game came at the start of the second half when Fresno State scored the first four goals of the half in a span of six and a half minutes to take an 8-7 lead and control of the game. After Corzel netted her second tally of the game, the Bulldogs scored four more times to take a 12-8 lead with 11 and a half minutes remaining in regulation.

The Bears never stopped fighting, though, scoring the final three goals of the game in the final five and a half minutes. They just ran out of time with their comeback effort.

Cal will remain in Berkeley next week against Oregon and Colorado. The Bears will face the Ducks first on Friday, April 13, at 5 p.m. from California Memorial Stadium.
