Cal Records Three Wins To Open Cardinal Classic

Bocancea, Rogers And Lind Notch Victories On Day One At Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – California track & field opened competition at the Cardinal Classic with three victories and two new members on the school's all-time top 10 list. The Bears also recorded nine personal bests throughout competition at Cobb Track & Angell Field on Stanford's campus.
 
Maja Ahmann started the day by cracking the school's all-time top 10 list. The freshman threw the javelin 141-0 to notch a personal best and the tenth-best mark in school history.
 
Brie Oakley bookended the Bears' day with another appearance on the all-time top-10 list. Oakley finished eighth in the women's 5000m competition, but she recorded the ninth-fastest time in school history as she crossed the line in 16:08.53.
 
Camryn Rogers and Silviu Bocancea swept the hammer throw competitions. Rogers won the women's competition with a mark of 210-10 to record her third win of the outdoor season. Bocancea notched his fourth win of 2018 as he recorded a mark of 205-8.
 
Andrew Lind won the men's pole vault competition as he cleared 15-11.25. Lind started the competition by clearing four consecutive bars without a miss to earn the win. Luciano Lopez took third as he also cleared 15-11.25.
 
Garrett Corcoran set a personal best in the 800m with a time of 1:51.15. The Villa Park, California native sat towards the back of the pack until the final 200m when he surged around the outside and moved into second place. Nikolaus Moore took fifth in that heat, just off his personal best with a time of 1:51.98. John Hogan finished second in the fourth section with a time of 1:54.75.
 
Rebecca Croft finished fourth in her section of the 800m with a season-best time of 2:10.18. Katherine Haysbert completed her two laps in 2:10.94 to take second in the third section.
 
Paul Zeiss claimed fourth place in a crowded 5000m field as he set a new personal best by more than 30 seconds. Zeiss crossed the line in 14:13.30 as he stayed with the front pack throughout the race. Steven Khan also set a personal best with a time of 14:28.74. Khan took 11th place as he moved past a couple of runners over the final two laps.
 
Jared Geredes recorded a new personal best in the long jump with a mark of 23-4.75 while Branndon Marion notched a 200m mark of 21.75 to set a new personal standard.
 
Cal will return to action at Stanford tomorrow at 2 p.m. The track events will feature some stiff competition beginning at 4:30 p.m.
