Bears Drop Series Finale In Extras

BERKELEY – An outstanding start by Aaron Shortridge and another standout offensive day by Andrew Vaughn put the Cal baseball team ahead heading to the late innings but visiting Washington rallied to score four runs over the final three innings and the Bears fell 4-3 in 10 innings at Evans Diamond.

Shortridge was the story for most of Sunday's game as the junior carried a perfect game into the sixth and a no-hitter into the seventh. The right-hander from Napa, Calif. befuddled the Huskies and gave the Bears a chance to take the lead deep into the game.

To that end, Vaughn helped put Cal (23-14, 9-9 Pac-12) ahead with a couple big swings of the bat. In the first inning, that was a double down the left field line to score Tanner Dodson and make it 1-0 Bears.

In the fifth, Cal's first baseman added to his impressive power totals to add to the Bears' lead. He turned the first pitch he saw from Washington starter Jordan Jones around, sending home run No. 18 over the fence in left-center to again score Dodson and put Cal up 3-0.

Washington (18-17, 8-7) made its move in the late innings, scoring one run in the eighth and two in the ninth to tie the game. An RBI single by Nick Kahle in the top of the 10th put the Huskies ahead 4-3 and, after Dodson gave Cal life with a one-out double in the bottom of the inning, freshman Josh Burgmann closed out the game with a strikeout to strand Bears on first and third.

Shortridge's final line reflected just how strong a start he had as he tossed eight innings and allowed one run on five hits. He struck out seven and didn't walk anyone. Vaughn went 3 for 4 and drove in three runs to cap a weekend in which he went 7 for 12 with two home runs, two doubles, four runs scored and six RBIs. Dodson also finished Sunday's contest with three hits.

Cal will look to carry the momentum of its series win over Washington with it when the Bears return to Evans Diamond on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. for a non-conference game against Sacramento State. Two days later, the Bears jump back into Pac-12 action when they begin a three-game series at Stanford. That series will be broadcast live by Pac-12 Network and all three games are set for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
