BERKELEY, Calif. – Camryn Rogers reset the record book in the women's hammer throw and five Bears won gold on the first day of competition at the Brutus Hamilton Challenge at Edwards Stadium.

Rogers set the school record with a throw of 215-2 on her first attempt. Rogers broke her own school record of 214-2, which she set at the Big Meet three weeks ago. Rogers also reset her own Canadian U-20 record and her Cal freshman record. Her mark also ranked as the second-best hammer throw by an under-20 athlete in the world this year. Rogers finished second in the competition as Sophie Hitchons won the competition by setting an Edwards Stadium record with a mark of 240-3. Hitchons was an Olympic bronze medal at the 2016 Olympics.

Silviu Bocancea took second in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 206-4. He finished second to Taylor Campbell who is a professional, competing for Great Britain.

On a day featuring distance races, the Bears claimed victory in all three events they were entered in. Charles Sherman won the men's 3000m steeplechase  with a time of 9:27.63 as he set a new personal best by 10 seconds. Anirudy Surapaneni and Marissa Dobry swept the 5000m races for Cal.

Dobry got out to an early lead and never looked back as he recorded a time of 17:14.99. That mark was a new personal best for Dobry as she held the lead for the entire race. Surapaneni also set a personal best as he finished the 5000m in 15:08.42 to claim victory. He ran with the pack for the majority of the contest, but made his move to take the lead with a couple laps remaining.

Terrence Wilson won the men's javelin competition with a throw of 191-2 while Chrissy Glasmann claimed gold in the women's javelin. Glasmann recorded a throw of 142-10 to record the win. Asha Culhane took ninth as she notched a personal best with a throw of 103-1.
