BERKELEY – Three more Cal baseball players came off the board on the final day of the 2018 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft as Jonah Davis, Tyrus Greene and Joey Matulovich all heard their names called with three days of picks coming to a close.
 
Davis got the Bears' day started Wednesday and he didn't wait long for a team to come calling. The native of La Jolla, Calif. was chosen by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 15^th round with the 444^th overall pick. One round later, Greene came off the board when he was chosen by the Chicago White Sox in the 16^th round with pick No. 468. Matulovich rounded out the day when he was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 20^th round with pick No. 605.
 
Those three players join Tanner Dodson, who was selected in the second compensatory round by Tampa Bay, and Aaron Shortridge, a fourth-round choice by the Pirates, in making up Cal's five-man draft class. It is the second time in the last three years that the Bears have had five or more players selected in a single draft.
 
A breakout 2018 campaign earned All-Pac-12 honors for Davis in his junior season. He established himself as one of the nation's premier power hitters, belting 14 home runs for a total that would have won the Pac-12 home run crown in 2017. His contributions certainly weren't confined to the long ball as he hit .321, good for second on the team, with nine doubles, two triples, 48 runs scored and 58 RBIs. He slugged .606 and had an on-base percentage of .446, both of which ranked in the top 10 in the conference.
 
Greene earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention for his work as Cal's everyday catcher and leadoff hitter. At the plate, the San Diego, Calif. native hit .320 with seven doubles, three home runs, 41 runs scored and 20 RBIs. On the basepaths, he ranked second on the team with nine steals. And defensively he made only three errors, allowed just four passed balls and threw out 16 potential base stealers.
 
Matulovich made 19 appearances for the Bears on the mound with five starts and compiled a 1-1 record and 3.47 ERA. A key member of Cal's pitching staff for three seasons, the right-hander from Danville, Calif. has appeared in 57 games as a Golden Bear and owns a career 3.79 ERA with 121 strikeouts in 163.2 innings pitched. He tossed Cal's lone complete game in 2017, striking out 10 in a 3-1 victory at Pepperdine.
