STOCKTON – Senior
Sam Ebstein scored his second goal of the season but it wasn't enough as the No. 14 Cal men's soccer team fell to No. 17 Pacific 2-1 in overtime Friday night at Knoles Field.
The Tigers scored first in the 22
nd minute and led 1-0 at halftime. But the Bears (2-1), who dominated the field in the second half, notched the equalizer when Ebstein fired off an unassisted rocket from the right side to tie the score in the 69
th minute.
Cal had a handful of other good scoring opportunities but couldn't find the back of the net again.
"It was a terrific match and we just fell a little bit short," Cal head coach
Kevin Grimes said. "It looked like we may get a second goal in the second half and hopefully get away with a win in regulation, but that's just the way it goes sometimes."
The Bears outshot the Tigers 12-10 and goalie
Drake Callender made four saves, including one as time expired in regulation.
UOP's Camden Riley ended the game with a header from a corner kick to provide the margin of victory.
"We came back from a goal down, which is always a great thing," Grimes said. "It takes great character to come back and get yourself back in the match. We played a terrific second half and OT."
The Bears will return to action Thursday when they take on Sac State in a special neutral site game at Avaya Stadium, the home of the MLS' San Jose Earthquakes. The game begins at 7 p.m. and admission and parking are free.
