SAN JOSE – Senior
Shinya Kadono registered four goals and an assist for a nine-point match and the Cal men's soccer team routed Sac State 6-2 on Thursday night at Avaya Stadium.
Kadono's offensive outburst was the most by a Cal player since
Christian Thierjung notched five goals during a 6-2 win over Harvard on Sept. 18, 2016. He also tied for the most goals in a single match this season in NCAA Division I men's soccer.
Kadono put on a show for the fans who came out to watch the game at the home of the San Jose Earthquakes, scoring once on a penalty kick and another unassisted. He then took nice feeds from
Christopher Grey and
Lucas Churchill for goals before assisting on the first career goal by freshman
Taylor Davila.
Alonzo Del Mundo got Cal on the board first with his first career goal at the 6-minute mark before Kadono notched his first score three minutes later. After the Hornets' Dominic Scotti cut the deficit to 2-1 on a penalty kick, Kadono scored again to make it 3-1 at the half.
Kadono's penalty kick began the scoring in the second half to make it 4-1 before Sac State converted another penalty kick to cut it to 4-2. Churchill was making his college debut.
Goalie
Drake Callender made six saves for the Bears, who return home to host UC Riverside on Sunday at Edwards Stadium.
