BERKELEY – The Cal women's soccer team remains undefeated at home this season, beating San Diego State, 3-1, on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (3-1-0, 0-0 Pac-12) jumped out to an early lead and held off a spirited comeback attempt by the Aztecs (1-3-0, 0-0-0) to record their second consecutive win of the season. Head coach
Neil McGuire's side continues to find success on the offensive side of the ball, matching its season-high with three goals on the afternoon.
Abi Kim,
Luca Deza, and
Kayla Fong found the back of the net for the Bears, who have now won 19 consecutive games at home in non-conference play, a streak that dates back to the 2014 season.
Playing their second match in a three-game homestand, the Bears came out energized and got on the board in the fourth minute. Sophomore midfielder
Daisy Cleverley whipped a ball into the box that found several Golden Bears waiting in front of goal. Redshirt junior
Anja Koehler elevated and was able to flick the ball backwards to Kim, who beat San Diego State goalkeeper Gabby English with a header of her own. Kim's goal was the quickest the Bears have scored in the last two seasons and marked her second of the season. Koehler and Cleverley both picked up their first points of the year with the assists.
Less than fifteen minutes later, it was Kim playing provider, blazing down the right wing and driving the ball across to Deza. The sophomore midfielder was there for the close-range finish, scoring her first goal of the season and the third of her collegiate career. Kim, who competed with the Under-20 U.S. Women's National Team earlier this summer at the U-20 FIFA Women's World Cup, picked up her first assist of the season and is now tied for the team lead with five points on the year.
The Bears continued to press in the first half, outshooting the visiting Aztecs,7-2, in the opening frame, including five shots on target.
A spirited second-half saw both teams continue to battle all over the field. Cal nearly found the back of the net again in the opening minutes of the second half, when a San Diego State handball set up a free kick for the Bears just wide of the 18-yard-box. Deza served the ball into a waiting Koehler on the back post, but the co-captain's header went wide of the far post.
Sophomore
Emma Westin got her head on a cross by Kim moments later, but English was there for the point-blank stop. The San Diego State goalkeeper ended the afternoon with five saves while
Olivia Sekany made one stop for the Bears in the win.
The Aztecs pulled one back in the 67
th minute when sophomore midfielder Chloe Frisch got endline and played a ball back across the box to Florence Laroche. The freshman midfielder tucked it inside the far post, beating Sekany for her first collegiate goal.
However, Cal responded and regained momentum ten minutes later with its third goal of the game. Westin crossed the ball in from the right wing and found Fong waiting on the far post. The junior forward headed it in for her second goal of the season, setting a new single-season best. This also marks Fong's third consecutive game with a point for the Bears, scoring against No. 19 Santa Clara on August 20 and assisting Westin's score in Cal's 2-0 win over Harvard on August 24.
Cal closed the afternoon with a 14-6 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Bears will be back in action on Sunday, hosting UC Santa Barbara (4-0-0, 0-0-0 Big West) at 3 p.m. PT at Edwards Stadium. Sunday's match vs the Gauchos will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks, with Joe Castellano and Kelly Gray on the call. The Gauchos entered the weekend unbeaten, bringing their 4-0-0 record to the Bay Area for Friday night matchup with San Francisco before Sunday's contest vs the Bears.
