Cal Closes Non-Conference With Draw

BERKELEY - The Cal women's soccer team closed the non-conference campaign with a double-overtime draw against UC Davis on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears (4-3-1, 0-0-0 Pac-12) opened the scoring in the 27th minute, as freshman Paige Metayer scored the first goal of her collegiate career. However, the Aggies (3-4-2, 0-0-0 Big West) leveled the score in the 60th minute as Emma  Hasco scored off a free kick from 25 yards out. Neither team was able to find the back of the net again, as the Bears recorded their first draw of the 2018 season.

Coming off a come-from behind win on Sunday at Oklahoma, the Bears got on the scoreboard first on Friday. Senior forward Miranda Nild beat her defender to the endline and crossed the ball into Metayer at the top of the six-yard-box. The 5'10" freshman from Irvine headed the ball back across the grain, beating Aggies' goalkeeper Alexis Smith to the far post. Metayer's header was one of few scoring chances for either team in the first half, with Cal and UC Davis combining for just five shots in the opening 45 minutes.

The second half saw the Bears open with a flurry of offensive activity, with both Nild and junior striker Kayla Fong getting good looks in on goal. However, the momentum swung towards the visitors in the 60th minute when the Aggies were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal. Hasco, a midfielder transfer from Penn State, lined up the free kick and drilled on past Cal goalkeeper Amanda Zodikoff, leveling the score at 1-1.

Both teams continued to press for the go-ahead goal, with dangerous chances for both sides. In the 67th minute, Metayer made a run through the middle of the pitch and ripped a dipping shot on frame that was tipped over the bar by Smith. Aggies forward Lauren Bouvia got in behind the Bears' backline in the 88th minute but her shot was saved by Zodikoff. A freshman from Concord, Zodikoff matched her career-high with five saves while Smith made seven stops for Davis.

Cal looked primed to put the game away in the 90th minute when a high-bouncing ball was played into the Aggies' 18-yard-box. Nild was running onto the ball but it was poked away right before the senior captain could make contact.
The Bears outshot the Aggies, 8-3, in the two overtime periods, including a shot by Luca Deza inside the box that was stopped at point-blank range and a header from Metayer off a set piece that was just off target.

The Bears will be back in action next weekend in Berkeley, hosting Arizona State at 1 p.m. PT on Saturday, September 22, to open Pac-12 play. Cal finished fifth in the conference table last season, posting a record of 6-4-1 in conference play. Cal and Arizona State played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw last season at Edwards Stadium in a match that saw the Golden Bears outshoot the visiting Sun Devils, 23-10. The Golden Bears were picked to finish fourth in the 2018 Pac-12 Preseason Coaches' Poll and play their first three conference games in Berkeley, with home matchups against USC and UCLA to close out the month of September.
