BERKELEY – A sunny Saturday morning at Spieker Aquatics Complex proved the perfect setting for the Cal men's water polo team to earn its 10th win of the year as 11 different players scored and the No. 4-ranked Bears claimed a 22-1 victory over No. 17 San Jose State.

Every player on Cal's roster got a chance to make an impact as the Bears (10-1) jumped out to an 8-0 lead after one period. During that first eight minutes, senior Johnny Hooper got a chance to make a little history as, in only his second match of the season, he passed head coach Kirk Everist for fourth on Cal's all-time scoring list with his 206th career goal.

Hooper eventually finished with six goals, his second-straight game with that scoring total, and with 208 career goals the Los Angeles native now sits 12 goals behind John Mann for third on Cal's all-time list. He also contributed four assists and two steals in the win.

Five more goals in the second period gave Cal a 13-0 lead at halftime and the Bears led 17-1 after three periods. Quality defense in front of starting goalkeeper Bernardo Carelli helped limit San Jose State (4-3) on the offensive end and, when the Spartans did get a chance, Carelli was there to make six saves and grab two steals in just three periods of play. Spencer Tagg took over for the final period and didn't allow a goal, making six saves and adding a steal to finish off the win.

"I think the best part of the game was our focus from the beginning to the end," Everist said. "There was intensity at the beginning to kind of set the tone but it went all the way to the last couple possessions. They were working for the right thing, attacking the right way, playing defense with intensity, helping each other, crashing and moving and that went for the entire four quarters which is important for us from a growth standpoint because we have had some blips when we change up lineups and go with some younger players or players who haven't gotten a lot of minutes."

Safak Simsek added a hat trick Saturday to run his season goal total to 21 while Odysseas Masmanidis moved to 20 on the year with a pair of goals. Vassilis Tzavaras, Joe Molina and Tamir Avital all scored twice and Spencer Farrar, Cade Kruse, Jordan Hoover, Chase Hamming and Jack Deely added one goal apiece.

Cal returns to action next week with a trip to Southern California as the Bears take on UC Irvine on Saturday and Pepperdine on Sunday. Both games are slated for a 1 p.m. start. Action moves closer to home from Oct. 12 to 14 with the MPSF Invitational at Stanford and play returns to Spieker Aquatics Complex on Oct. 20 when the Bears host UC Santa Barbara as well as their annual alumni game.
