Bears Drop Pac-12 Opener To UCLA

BERKELEY – Shinya Kadono scored his Pac-12 leading ninth goal of the season but the Cal men's soccer team fell to UCLA 2-1 in its conference opener on Thursday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.

Kadono's header tied the score at 1-1 midway through the second half and also extended his scoring streak to four consecutive games. Kadono now has 20 points this season, which also leads the Pac-12.

After the Bruins took a 1-0 lead at halftime, the Bears (4-3-2) dominated possession for much of the second half. They evened the match after a header by senior Sam Ebstein ricocheted off the crossbar, and Kadono converted.

UCLA scored the game-winner five minutes later.

After being outshot 5-2 in the first half, Cal won the battle of shots 9-4 in the second half to outshoot the Bruins 11-9 for the match. Kadono finished with five shots to give him 36 for the season, which also paces the Pac-12.

Ebstein returned after a two-game absence due to injury. The Bears played Thursday's match without starting midfielder Simon Lekressner.

Cal returns to the pitch Sunday when it hosts San Diego State at 12 p.m. The match will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
