BERKELEY – The Cal men's soccer team outshot UC Riverside 18-4 but neither team could break through for a goal and Sunday's match at Edwards Stadium ended in a 0-0 tie.
The Bears (3-1-1) had most of their highest scoring chances in the first half. Seniors
Shinya Kadono and
Sam Ebstein each had five shots. Kadono was coming off a four-goal, nine-point performance in a 6-2 win over Sac State on Thursday.
The Bears played the match with a depleted roster, as defender
Christopher Grey and forward
Tommy Williamson missed the contest with injuries. Freshman defender
JJ Foe Nuphaus missed both of Cal's matches this week after getting called up to the U-19 U.S. National Team. Forward
Spencer Held and midfielder
Christian Gomez were already previously out with injuries.
The Bears ended up with five shots on goal. It was Cal's second straight bruising contest, as the teams combined for 25 fouls. The Bears and Hornets had 31 total fouls between them on Thursday.
Cal continues its home-heavy early schedule with two more matches at Edwards Stadium next weekend. The Bears host Delaware on Friday in their first match of the season to be televised by the Pac-12 Networks. Cal then welcomes No. 22 UMass-Lowell to Berkeley on Sunday.
