BERKELEY – The Cal men's water polo team continues to run a parallel path when it comes to success in both the pool and the classroom and on Friday those efforts were recognized with the announcement that seven Golden Bears have earned All-Academic honors from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Junior Spencer Farrar checked in with Cal's top cumulative GPA after the fall, compiling a 3.48 mark in addition to a standout season in the pool. Juniors Bernardo Carelli and Safak Simsek, who both earned All-America honors in 2018, made the list with GPAs of 3.38 and 3.25, respectively. All-MPSF selections Jordan Hoover (3.21) and Nikos Delagrammatikas (3.14) also earned academic distinction while team captains and All-Americans Vassilis Tzavaras (3.03) and Johnny Hooper (3.01) closed their Cal careers with academic honors of their own.

The award recognizes athletes who have compiled a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA, are at least a sophomore academically, have completed one full academic year at the institution and have competed in 50 percent or more of the institution's competitions that season.

Cal's efforts in the classroom under head coach Kirk Everist have been both consistent and noteworthy over the past several seasons. In September, the team earned the 2017-18 Newmark Award for the Cal program with the most improved team GPA. That success carried into the fall as 19 members of a 24-man roster registered a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher.
