EUGENE, Ore.-
The Cal women's soccer team conjured up some late heroics on the road once again, as senior
Mia Corbin provided the equalizer in the 88
th minute in Cal's 1-1 double-overtime draw vs Oregon. The Ducks (4-3-5, 0-2-2 Pac-12) got on the board first after a goal by Zoe Hasenauer in the 34
th minute, but the Golden Bears (9-3-1, 1-2-1 Pac-12) put their goalless drought to an end, as Corbin found the back of the net in the 88
th minute to send the match to overtime. Neither team was able to find the decisive goal in the final 20 minutes, and Cal earned its first draw of the season.
With the win, Cal improves to 4-0-1 away from home, one of only nine teams in Division I women's soccer that remains unbeaten on the road this season.
"After a difficult start, we battled back to score a good late goal," said Cal head coach
Neil McGuire. "We are really happy for Mia as she has worked so hard all season, and to get her first goal was a nice reward at such a critical time."
With both teams looking to bounce back from losses their last time out, it was Oregon who opened the match on the front foot, forcing Cal goalkeeper
Angelina Anderson into three saves in the first seven minutes of action.
Despite the early onslaught by the Ducks, the Bears found their footing after the first ten minutes and started to posses the ball more in their attacking half. Sophomore midfielder
Paige Metayer had solid strike from the top of the box in the 13
th minute, but her shot hit off the crossbar and out of play.
Less than five minutes later, the Ducks put a shot of their own off the post, as Hasenauer cracked one off the near post. The rebound ricocheted across the goal, but no the Bears backline handled the rebound.
However, Hasenauer and the Ducks broke through in the 34
th minute, after a left-footed strike tucked inside the near post, beating Anderson.
Trailing at halftime for the first time this season, the Bears dictated play in the second half, outshooting the Ducks 12-4 in the second half. However, Cal was unable to find the target until the 88
th minute, when Corbin picked up a pass from
Emma Westin and blasted a left-footed shot towards the near post. Oregon goalkeeper Katelyn Carter got her hands to it, but was unable to control the shot and it went into the back of the net. It was the first goal of the season for Corbin, who leads Cal with four assists this season. Westin picked up her second assist of the year. Corbin's equalizer sent Cal to overtime for the second time in as many matches.
Neither team was able to fully settle into a rhythm in the first overtime period. The Bears had a promising chance when
Emily Smith drove free kick to the top of the six-yard box, but Carter won the challenge with Westin, getting a hand on it to punch the danger away. Just moments later, Anderson denied the Ducks with a strong diving save to her left. Anderson finished with a career-high seven saves on the night, another strong outing for the Golden Bear rookie.
The Bears continue their roadtrip on Sunday, taking on Oregon State (9-2-1, 1-2-1 Pac-12) at 1 p.m. PT at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis. The Beavers went a perfect 8-0-0 in the non-conference campaign, but are coming off a 2-0 loss to Stanford on Thursday evening.
