Cal Ties UCLA 3-3

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - There were plenty of heroics in the Cal men's soccer team's Pac-12 game at UCLA on Sunday, with Jonathan Estrada scoring twice, Paolo Carrillo-Weisenburger netting one goal and Drake Callender saving a second-half penalty kick. But in the end of the back and forth affair, the two teams settled for a 3-3 tie at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

The Golden Bears now have a 6-3-2 record (2-2-1 in the Pac-12). UCLA is 5-5-2 (1-3-1 Pac-12).

"It was an incredible performance by the players," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "It was amazing to come back twice and then take a lead. They put an incredible effort in. That's all you can ask from them."

Cal trailed at 1-0 and 2-1 before tying the match each time and eventually taking a 3-2 lead.

In the 10th minute, UCLA's Milan Iloski – the nation's leading scorer – hit a laser from the corner of Cal's penalty area to give the Bruins the 1-0 lead.

But the lead lasted just 35 seconds. In the 11th minute, Cal forward Alonzo Del Mundo hit a cross that found Paolo Carrillo-Weisenburger near the far post, and the freshman midfielder stuck the ball past UCLA goalkeeper Justin Garces to tie the game at 1-1.

About three and a half minutes later, Matthew Powell eluded Cal's defense to score from just outside the six-yard box, and UCLA led again, 2-1.

In the 23rd minute, UCLA was playing with all 10 field players on Cal's side of the field when the Bears intercepted a pass and found Estrada streaking through the Bruins' defense. With Garces playing well off his line, Estrada forged into UCLA's box and slotted the ball past the goalie to tie the game at 2-2.

It stayed 2-2 at halftime.

After the early barrage of goals, both defenses tightened up in the second half. But the Bears gave up a penalty kick in the 58th minute, with Iloski set to take it. The 6-3 Callender made his second penalty-kick save of the season when he parried away the Bruin's shot and then pounced on the loose ball to preserve the 2-2 tie.

"Drake's so quick and explosive, and with his size and arm reach, it's intimidating as a shooter to see Drake right in front of you," Grimes said. "It's difficult for a shooter, who has to think, Can I really beat this guy? It gives him an edge on penalty kicks. It's a great trait to have as a goalkeeper."

On a Cal counterattack in the 69th minute, the Bears found Christian Gomez alone on the flank, and the sophomore defender took the ball deep into the attacking third before crossing into UCLA's six-yard box. An unmarked Estrada, on a run to the far post, roofed his shot past Garces to give Cal a 3-2 lead.

"Jonah was spectacular, and we even lost him for half of the first half when he came out with a little knock," Grimes said. "But he came back strong for the second half and overtime."

The Bears had a chance to add to their lead in the 82nd minute, but Garces saved forward Tommy Williamson's shot. UCLA countered and in the 83rd minute sent a cross into Cal's box that was headed back towards Alexis Triadis. The substitute lashed a shot past a diving Callender to knot the score at 3-3.

Callender made a nice save on a Jefferson Alade effort in the 87th minute. The match eventually went to overtime and ultimately remained tied, 3-3.

Cal briefly returns to nonconference play when its plays at Portland on Oct. 22.
