BOULDER, Colo. - The Cal women's soccer team continued its streak of road success and picked up another point away from home, battling Colorado to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on a snowy Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field. With the tie, the Golden Bears (11-3-3, 3-2-3 Pac-12) extend their unbeaten streak to five in a row and remain unbeaten on the road in 2019, one of only six teams in Division I soccer that has not dropped a road game this season.
Colorado opened the scoring 14 minutes in with a goal by Taylor Kornieck, but the Bears tied the match in the 67th minute as junior Emma Westin scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Westin has now scored in three consecutive games for the Golden Bears and her 10 goals are tied for third in the conference this season.
"Today was a difficult game in harsh conditions against a very good Colorado team," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire after the match. "We are very proud of the players' resilience. This is never an easy road trip playing in altitude, so going undefeated is a positive."
After battling back for a 2-1 win on Thursday night at Utah, the Bears faced another tough test on Sunday against the Buffaloes.
The hosts jumped out to an early lead after senior standout Kornieck found the back the net in the 14th minute, powering her way into the box and blasting a shot inside the far post.
However, Cal quickly pushed in pursuit of an equalizer and had several dangerous looks to level in the first half. Westin blasted a shot on target in the 17th minute that forced Colorado goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins into a save, but the rebound spilled to Cal's Mia Corbin, but the senior could not keep her shot on frame. Westin and Paige Metayer, who provided the equalizer in Thursday's match a Utah, both had chances in the 31st minute, but saw their shots saved. Tompkins finished the day with eight saves. Angelina Anderson made six saves on the afternoon for the Bears, while Cal was credited with two additional team saves. Â
Trailing at the half for just the second time this season, Cal would not be denied in the second half. After a pair of early shots by the Buffs to open the half, the Bears came up with the equalizer in the 67th minute. Kim started the play on the right wing and cut through several defenders before serving a ball into Westin at the top of the box. The Swedish youth international controlled the ball with her chest and tucked her shot inside the far post. Westin's 10 goals the season are the most by any Cal player since 2016 and she has now scored in her last three outings for the Golden Bears. Kim, whose speed created opportunities for the Bears all afternoon, registered her sixth assist of the season, already a personal single-season best.
Neither team was able to find another goal in regulation and the Bears headed to overtime for the fourth time this season.
Colorado outshot Cal, 7-4, in overtime, including a 4-0 advantage in shots on goal. Anderson came up with a diving stop the deny Kornieck in the 110th minute after the senior got her head on a long throw in.
Over the entirety of the match, the Golden Bears outshot the Buffs, 21-17, and held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
The Bears now return to Berkeley for their final homestand of the regular season. Cal hosts Arizona at 1 p.m. PT on Thursday and will take on Arizona State at 12 p.m. PT on Sunday, November 3. Prior to next Sunday's match against the Sun Devils, the Bears will recognize the eight members of this year's graduating class – Maggie Bell, Daisy Cleverley, Mia Corbin, Jordyn Elliott, Kayla Fong, Abi Kim, Avery Lakeman, and Olivia Sekany.
