CORVALLIS, Ore. – No. 19 California tied a season-high with 14 blocks on the way to a 25-20, 25-22, 25-14 sweep over Oregon State on Friday night at Gill Coliseum.
It was the second straight match the Bears (12-1, 2-1 Pac-12) have recorded 14 blocks after tallying the same number last time out in a five-set win over Washington State at Haas Pavilion.
"I thought we were really dialed in with our front row tonight with reads, reactions and picking up set locations," Cal head coach
Sam Crosson said. "Our scouting report was really good tonight and I definitely want to give some credit to associate head coach Jen Dorr and assistant coach
Amir Lugo-Rodriguez for that tonight. Preslie (Anderson) and Lauren (Forte) were both really active tonight with a lot of good hand positions. It's tough for attackers when you have four hands in front of you all the time and that can be frustrating for attackers."
The Bears trailed 17-12 in the first set before using a timeout that led to four straight points, three of them coming on blocks. Cal went on to make it eight of nine points to take a 20-18 lead on the way to taking the first set 25-20.
Oregon State took another early lead in the second set at 8-4, but the Bears battled back again, using a five point run to grab a 15-13 advantage and held the lead the rest of the set. California rolled in the third set, never trailing on the way to the 25-14 win and the sweep. Â
Senior
Maddie Haynes recorded three solo blocks and six kills, while junior
Preslie Anderson and sophomore
Lauren Forte each notched five block assists.
The Beavers (8-6, 2-1 Pac-12) were led by a game-high 11 kills from Chloe Brown. California got a team-high 10 kills from junior
Mima Mirkovic, along with seven kills apiece from seniors
Savannah Rennie and
Bailee Huizenga. Senior libero
Emma Smith tallied a game-high 12 digs.
"One of our strengths is being athletic and aggressive at the net," Crosson said. "We created a lot of points because of stuffs or on soft block to transition opportunities. That's all good for us. I was really pleased with our blocking tonight. It was nice to see us stick it out through the first two sets and finish with our best set in the third to get the sweep. Winning on the road in this conference does not come easy, so we take every one we can get and we'll get ready for Oregon on Sunday."
