No. 19 Cal Sweeps Through Oregon Trail

The Bears Earn First Win In Eugene Since 2012.

EUGENE, Ore. – No. 19 California volleyball swept through No. 25 Oregon 25-14, 25-18, 25-21 at Matthew Knight Arena on Sunday afternoon behind a game-high 13 kills from senior Bailee Huizenga on .440 hitting.

The win marks the Bears' first victory in Eugene since earning a 3-2 decision on Nov. 2, 2012.

California (13-1, 3-1 Pac-12) controlled the match from start to finish, using a 7-0 run in the first to make it 16-7 and put Oregon away from there. The Bears used another run in the second set, turning a 6-6 tie into an 11-6 advantage after a kill from junior Mima Mirkovic.

"Today's match was one of our best this season in terms of consistency, execution of scouting reports, and we were really dialed in with our blocking defense," head coach Sam Crosson said. "We made it really hard on Oregon to score points in the first two sets. Oregon's a really good offensive team and we were able to keep it close in the third before our run out of the timeout. We showed tenacity and desire when we could have folded up and took the easy route to a fourth set. We went the other way and that's very promising for us going forward."

Mirkovic tallied eight kills while sophomore Lauren Forte added six and the Bears got five more from senior Maddie Haynes. Sophomore setter Jade Blevins recorded a career-high three service aces to go along with seven digs. Senior libero Emma Smith notched a team-high 12 digs.

The Ducks (5-8, 1-3 Pac-12) battled in the third, using the home crowd to take a 20-18 lead, but kills by senior Savannah Rennie and Mirkovic tied the score out of a Cal timeout before two Oregon errors put the set out of reach.

"I thought we did a really good job of sticking to the scouting report this weekend," Huizenga said. "We were highly engaged in serve and pass which allowed us to run our offense and pose a threat at every position, which caused chaos on the opponent's side of the net. Being able to run our middles and being in system opened up opportunities for the pin hitters to be one-on-one and score."

California won the kill battle 39-35 and out-hit Oregon .269-.135. The Bears recorded 50 digs compared to 48 for the Ducks.

"We're starting to figure out how to contain our opponents in terms of offensive production," Crosson said. "Ronika (Stone) is an All-American and we wanted to try and minimize the amount of swings she could have. We had a lot of control soft blocks and that helped us get back in to rhythm. Jade (Blevins) had a really nice match today. She kept them on their toes with tempo and good decisions. When those things happen we're a tough team to stop."

Up Next: The Bears return to Haas Pavilion for the beginning of a four-match home stand. First up is Arizona State on Friday, October 11 for a 7 p.m. first serve. The match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Networks.
