BERKELEY - Ninety minutes was not enough to determine a winner on Sunday afternoon, as No. 20 California and No. 14 Washington State squared off at Edwards Stadium in a tightly-contested battle of Top-25 teams. But in the 92nd minute, it was the visiting Cougars (9-2-0, 2-1-0 Pac-12) who came up with the game's only goal, besting the Golden Bears in overtime, 1-0. Makamae Gomera-Stevens found the back of the net after a deep throw in, handing Cal (9-3-0, 1-2-0 Pac-12) its first overtime loss of the season.Â
Cal outshot Washington State, 14-9, on the afternoon, with a 6-4 advantage in shots on goal, but was held scoreless for the second time this week. Yet despite the final score line, Cal head coach
Neil McGuire was impressed with his squad's performance and response following a 1-0 loss to Washington on Thursday.
"I think the team can take a lot of positives from today," said Cal head coach
Neil McGuire, "The way that we played and the courage to play soccer against a very good Washington State team was impressive. Credit to them for the victory. Obviously, we're disappointed with the result and there are some areas we will keep trying to improve upon, and we'll get back to that on Tuesday. Coaches and players are committed to excellence and we'll get together and we'll see what we can do."Â
Looking for its second win of the season over a ranked opponent, the Bears opened the match on the front foot, creating several promising opportunities in the opening 15 minutes of the match.
Abi Kim and
Emma Westin both put shots on target, but their efforts were turned away by Cougs goalkeeper Ella Dederick. Redshirt sophomore
Kailee Gifford, who provided the game winner in Cal's win over No. 7 UCLA, put a nice strike on target in the 34th minute, but Dederick was there for the save again. Defensively, the Bears' organization was on display as the held the Cougars - who boast one of the highest-scoring offenses in the conference - to just one shot through the first 45 minutes of play.
Scoreless at the half, Cal senior
Mia Corbin nearly put the Bears in front in the 59th minute, but her shot from close-range rattled off the crossbar and out of play. Washington State upped its intensity and generated several dangerous chances of its own, but was unable to solve the Bears' backline and goalkeeper
Angelina Anderson. Anderson, a freshman who captained the Under-17 U.S. Women's National Team at the 2018 U-17 FIFA Women's World Cup in Uruguay, asserted her presence all game, finishing with three saves on the afternoon and making several strong plays off her line on crosses and flighted balls into the area. Fellow rookie
Jadyn Shinn nearly put the game away for the Bears in the 81st minute, but couldn't keep her strike from just outside the box under the crossbar, and Cal went to overtime for the first time this season.
However, just 71 seconds into overtime, the Cougars put the game away off a finish by Gomera-Stevens. A long throw-in by Elaily Hernandez-Repreza was flicked on by Averie Collins and fell to Gomera-Stevens. The junior chested it down and laced a shot through traffic that beat Anderson to the far post.
The Bears will be back in action next weekend, heading to the Pacific Northwest for road games against Oregon (Thursday, Oct. 10) and Oregon State (Sunday, Oct. 13).Â
