Bears Fall In ITA All-American Qualifying

TULSA, Okla. – Cal men's tennis senior Bjorn Hoffmann was one win away from reaching the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships, but the Golden Bear fell to Georgia's 81st-ranked Philip Henning, 6-2, 6-4, in the third and final round of qualifying singles on Tuesday at the Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.
 
Earlier in the day, Hoffmann upset Florida's seventh-seeded and 64th-ranked Johannes Ingildsen, 7-6(2), 6-1. But Cal junior Paul Barretto, ranked 121st, lost to Florida's 70th-ranked Lukas Greif, 6-4, 6-1, and sophomore Kent Hunter fell to Illinois' 79th-ranked Zeke Clark, 6-2, 7-5, in the second round.
 
In a consolation singles match in Tulsa, Cal junior Jacob Brumm beat Nevada's Julien Evrard, 6-3, 7-6(4).
 
Cal has two Bears playing in the All-American main draws starting Wednesday. Sophomore Yuta Kikuchi, ranked 75th, will face Texas A&M's 16th-ranked Hady Habib at 9 a.m. CT in main draw singles. The 16th-ranked pair of Kikuchi and junior Jacob Brumm will take on USC's 28th-ranked Bradley Frye and Riley Smith at 1 p.m. CT.
