Cal Falls To SDSU In Home Finale

BERKELEY - Despite a 27-9 shots advantage for the California men's soccer team, the Golden Bears lost to visiting San Diego State, 1-0, on a penalty kick in the second half of Cal's last home game of the regular season at Edwards Stadium.

The Aztecs' Adam Vargas converted the PK in the 51st minute against Cal senior goalkeeper Drake Callender, who played the second half after fellow senior Noah Texter played the first half in goal.

The Bears honored Callender, Texter, defender Simon Lekressner and forward Javier Macias prior to the game on Senior Day.

"The seniors have been phenomenal their entire four years here," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "Their incredible ambassadors for the programs and will be incredible alums for us for years to come. I couldn't be happier with all the years we spent with them, and we're going to miss them dearly. Today they went out with the best possible effort that they could have. It was one of those days in soccer where you just couldn't score."

Cal will take a record of 6-5-3 (2-3-2 in the Pac-12) into its final three regular-season matches, which are all on the road. SDSU improved to 4-11-1 (1-8-0 Pac-12).

In the first half, Cal outshot SDSU, 10-6, but the Aztecs had an 8-6 edge in corner kicks. The Bears had their chances, including a sequence in the 26th minute in which Lekressner put a shot on goal, with SDSU's Tetsuya Kadono saving it, and then Alonzo Del Mundo followed with a shot that went just wide. In the 42nd minute, Cal substitute forward Fahmi Ibrahim missed just wide with a blast from the corner of the Aztecs' box.

Texter and Kadono – the younger brother of Cal alumnus Shinya Kadono – each had two saves at halftime to keep the game tied 0-0.

Early in the second half, an infraction in San Diego State's box led to the Aztecs' PK, with Vargas giving his team the lead.

But the Bears – who enjoyed a big second-half shot disparity of 17-4 – had their chances and put six shots on SDSU's goal. In the 64th minute, a Cal corner kick found JJ Foe Huphaus, but the defender's header was saved. At 77:22, Kadono saved another Del Mundo shot and 10 seconds later stopped a shot by Tommy Williamson.

Cal outshot SDSU 6-0 the rest of the game but couldn't put a shot on frame.

The Bears next play at Washington on Thursday at 7 p.m. and at Oregon State on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. They end the regular season in the Big Clasico at Stanford on Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
