Andre Kelly set a new career-high with 26 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the floor, but it wasn't enough for California in a 89-77 loss to Saint Mary's Saturday night in Haas Pavilion.
The Bears (6-5) fought back in the second half, cutting a largest lead of 19 down to single digits down the stretch. Sophomore
Matt Bradley had 14 points as four Bears scored in double figures. Junior
Grant Anticevich tallied 11 points, while graduate senior
Kareem South scored 10 for California.
Cal outscored the Gaels 48-44 in the final 20 minutes.
Saint Mary's (10-2) was led by a game-high 32 points from Jordan Ford and Malik Fitts added 28.Â
The Bears jumped out to an early 10-2 lead on back-to-back 3-pointers from
Kareem South, forcing Saint Mary's to spend a timeout at the 15:19 mark of the half. The Gaels answered back with a run of seven straight to take a 17-15 advantage with 11:16 left in the first.
Saint Mary's used another run, this time behind four straight made 3-pointers to grab their biggest lead of the half at 34-24 with 4:24 remaining, forcing Cal to use a timeout. The Gaels took a 45-29 lead into the locker room at halftime behind scorching hot shooting, including 9-of-13 from behind the 3-point line and 21 points from Fitts. Â
