LAS VEGAS - California wasted no time taking momentum in Friday's contest against Fresno State. Cal scored on three of its first five shots of the game to jump out to an early 3-0 lead, but Fresno State came back to win a close, offensive contest, 15-14, Friday afternoon in Las Vegas.
As usual, the Bears (0-3) spread the wealth around, boasting five different goal scorers. Cal was paced by four goals from
Marisa Kuberra, while
Kirsten Swanson also garnered a hat trick, and
Susie Ropp and
Eliza Christman each scored twice.
Kuberra got the scoring started on an 8-meter shot in the first minute, while
Caroline Corzel and
Susie Ropp followed with goals of their own to give the Bears a 3-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game.
Kuberra and Christman were both solid from the 8-meter line, as Christman finished 3-for-3 and Kuberra 2-for-2 in free-position shots. Kuberra also scooped up six draws.
After jumping out to the early 3-0 lead, Fresno State climbed back into the contest. The game was tied on three separate occasions in the first half before the Bulldogs took an 8-7 lead late in the first half before taking a 9-7 lead into the break.
In the second half, after Fresno State scored in the first 20 seconds to go up by three, back-to-back scores from the Bears cut the deficit down to one in the first five minutes of the half. The back-and-forth second half saw Fresno State reclaim the lead quickly every time Cal tied the score.
With 3:30 left in regulation, Fresno State was handed a yellow card, giving the Bears a player-advantage, but back-to-back shots from Swanson were both saved by the Bulldog goalie. On the ensuing Fresno State possession,
Marina Smith caused a huge turnover to give Cal a chance to tie it up with 1:13 left on the clock. But Corzel's shot with 30 seconds left was stopped to clinch the win for the Bulldogs.
In goal for the Bears,
Jenny Wilkens made eight saves along with collecting a team-high six ground balls. Through three games in 2019, Wilkens leads the Bears with 14 ground balls, giving her 133 for her career, which ranks second in school history.
The Bears will face San Diego State in Las Vegas Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
