Cal Comes Back on Senior Day

Bears Overcome 20-Point Deficit To Down Arizona In Overtime

BERKELEY -  "We weren't losing on Senior Day."

Recee Caldwell said it loud and clear in Cal's postgame press conference after bringing the words to life on the court. Caldwell led an improbable comeback that saw the Golden Bears (16-11, 7-9 Pac-12) erase a 20-point second half deficit to beat Arizona, 82-76, in overtime on Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.

The first grad transfer in program history, Caldwell had a season-high 24 points for the Bears, who trailed 39-19 midway through the third quarter. But, the grad transfer made sure her final game at Haas Pavilion would be victorious one, leading Cal to its largest come-from-behind win in a decade. Caldwell went 7-for-11 from the floor after halftime and accounted for 17 of Cal's 20 third-quarter points, scoring 13 points and assisting four more in the third stanza to spark Cal's comeback.

Freshman McKenzie Forbes was clutch down the stretch, scoring all 17 of her points in the fourth quarter and overtime, going 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. Junior CJ West also provided key contributions for the Bears off the bench, finishing with 10 points and a pair of offensive rebounds. Senior center Kristine Anigwe extended her double-double streak to 28 in a row, finishing with 20 rebounds, 16 points, and two blocked shots in her final game at Haas Pavilion.

Redshirt sophomore Aari McDonald led the Wildcats (17-10, 7-9 Pac-12) with 31 points, going 12-23 from the floor. Sam Thomas (13 points) and Tee Tee Starks (12 points) also scored in double-figures for Arizona.

After a tightly contested first quarter that saw four ties and a pair of led changes, Arizona opened the second quarter on a 17-0 run while Cal's offense sputtered, managing just four points on 2-14 shooting from the floor. The Bears shot just 21 percent (6-28) overall in the first half but flipped the switch coming out of the locker room. Cal shot 62 percent (21-34) from the floor and 71 percent (10-14) from three in the second half, including a 4-of-5 performance from three-point range in the fourth quarter.

Cal erased the double-digit deficit with a 15-4 run early in the fourth quarter, cutting Arizona's lead to two after a three-pointer by Forbes with 4:02 remaining in regulation. Arizona took a 62-59 lead with 34 seconds left on the clock after a free thrown by Destiny Graham, but Caldwell tied the game with a three from deep in the left corner. Arizona went up by one with 15 seconds left to play after a free throw by Sam Thomas, but Cal tied the game back up after Anigwe grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on her way back up, knocking down one of two from the line.

The Bears carried their momentum into the extra period, jumping out to a 67-64 lead after scores by Anigwe and Forbes. Arizona countered with a run of its own and took a 72-70 lead after a driving layup by McDonald. But once again, Cal had an answer, this time coming from Forbes. The freshman from Folsom drilled three-pointers on back-to-back possession for the Bears, including a straight-away three with 1:05 left on the clock that gave Cal the lead for good. The Bears were able to convert from the foul line to secure the weekend sweep.

The comeback, coupled with the emotions of Senior Day, made it a game Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb won't soon forget.

"I'm going to remember this win forever," Gottlieb said after the game. "We have some pretty incredible seniors and we talked about how you impact others and how you leave a legacy… We saw one of the most gritty team wins and I couldn't be more proud than I am of this one."

The Bears will close out the regular season on the road, heading to the Pacific Northwest for matchups with Washington  (Friday, 7 p.m. PT) and Washington State (Sunday, Noon PT).
