CORVALLIS, Ore. – After a promising start to the weekend, the Cal baseball team ended things on a flat note.

Oregon State jumped out of the gate with five runs in the first inning Sunday and rolled to a 10-5 victory at Goss Stadium.

After taking Friday's series opener, the Bears had thoughts of leaving the Northwest with a series victory over the defending College World Series champions.

But following that 3-2 win, the Beavers claimed their own 3-2 victory Saturday night and then the Bears fell into an early hole Sunday that they couldn't climb out of.

Oregon State sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the first and struck for five runs off Cal starter Arman Sabouri. In the second, Beavers second baseman Ryan Ober connected for a grand slam off Nick Proctor that made it  9-0.

Cal (11-10, 2-4 Pac-12) got run-scoring singles from Korey Lee and Max Flower in  the third. Then the Bears made it closer with three in the seventh, highlighted by RBI doubles from Andrew Vaughn and  Lee, to get within four runs at 9-5.

But Oregon State tacked on an insurance run in the eighth and closed things out.

The Bears will return to the Bay Area and prepare for a non-conference road game Tuesday night at Sacramento State. Then they'll host Long Beach State for a three-game non-conference series next weekend at Evans Diamond.

Cal also will hope for good news regarding a right foot injury to center fielder Brandon McIlwain. The redshirt sophomore left Sunday's game in the bottom of the second.

Right-hander Grant Gambrell went 6 1/3 innings, struck out 12 and didn't issue a walk Sunday for the Beavers (16-4-1, 3-3). That made it tough on the Bears, though they did manage to get into Oregon State's bullpen and make it a ballgame in the late innings.

Lee's weekend was a bright spot for the Bears. The junior catcher went 6-for-11 with two doubles and four RBI to raise his batting average to .333.

Vaughn's run-scoring double down the left-field line was his only hit of the weekend, but the returning All-American did draw four walks over the three games.
