SACRAMENTO – The Cal baseball team was held to four hits in a 6-0 loss Tuesday at Sacramento State.
The Bears advanced just one runner as far as third base against a stingy Hornets pitching staff that sports the lowest ERA in the Western Athletic Conference.
Cameron Eden,
Max Flower,
Quentin Selma and
Darren Baker notched the base hits for Cal (11-11), which will try to return to the win column this weekend against Long Beach State.
Ryan Walstad went 4-for-4 for Sacramento State (16-8) and Steven Moretto hit a solo homer in the seventh.
Eden got things started well for the Bears, capping a long at-bat with a single to lead off the game and stealing second. But he was stranded there. Cal struck out 13 times total against seven Sacramento State pitchers.
The Hornets scored two runs each in the second and third, then extended their lead with two more in the seventh. Freshman
Mitchell Scott made the start for
Cal and took the loss, allowing two runs over 1 2/3 innings. The Bears issued eight walks total.
A positive for Cal was the relief work turned in by
Carson Olson, a sophomore who made his first appearance in nearly a month. The right-hander turned in 1 1/3 scoreless innings to keep Cal within striking distance in the middle innings.
The Bears will host Long Beach State for a non-conference weekend series that begins Friday at 7:05 p.m.
