Non-Conference Matchup Opens Up Five-Game Homestand

After back-to-back weekend road trips, the Cal baseball team returns to Evans Diamond for a five-game homestand that begins with a 7:05 p.m. game Tuesday against Sacramento State. The Bears went 1-2 over the weekend at No. 1 UCLA, winning Friday night's middle game 4-1 for what is believed to be the first victory over a top-ranked team in program history. With an 8-7 conference mark, Cal is in fifth place in the Pac-12 with a home series against Oregon slated for this upcoming weekend.

Tuesday's non-conference clash with Sacramento State is a rematch of a March 26 game in the capital city that the Hornets won, 6-0. The Bears are 12-7 this season in non-conference matchups, and this will be their first non-conference opponent since they swept Long Beach State at home March 29-31 (an April 8 game against New Mexico was cancelled).

Cal's victory over UCLA on Friday night featured a terrific outing from right-hander Jared Horn, who gave up three hits and just an unearned run over 8 1/3 innings while striking out a career-high 10. That outing earned Horn the Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week Award. He's the second Cal player to be honored by the conference in 2019, as first baseman Andrew Vaughn won Player of the Week honors for Feb. 18-24.

Junior catcher Korey Lee had a two-homer game Thursday against UCLA, and he's moved into a tie for sixth in the Pac-12 with nine homers on the season. As a team, Cal's 47 home runs are second-most in the Pac-12.

SCOUTING THE HORNETS

•  Sacramento State (26-13 overall) enters midweek play on a roll as the Hornets have won five of their last seven in a stretch that includes conference series wins over Seattle University and Chicago State. That success has resulted in a 12-3 WAC record.
