Varsity Eight Wins Gold At Pac-12 Championships
Cal Finishes Third In Team Standings In Tightly-Contested Day Of Racing
GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The perfect season continues for the Cal women's rowing varsity eight, which captured gold at the 2019 Pac-12 Rowing Championships on Sunday at Lake Natoma. Battling through stormy conditions, the Bears medaledĀ in every race and finished third overall in the team standings, just one point behind first-place Washington and 0.5 points back of second-place Stanford.Ā Ā
"The team did great," said Cal head coach
Al Acosta. "The varsity obviously did great and the second varsity had an outstanding race. They were down early, but showed a lot of heart and came through in the end and made up a lot of time versus Stanford. The varsity four fought out a tough one, and our third varsity and novice eights had their best races of the year. That'sĀ what you want from your last race."
With heavy thunderstorms forecast for Lake Natoma in the early afternoon, Sunday's racing order was flipped, with the varsity eights opening the program.Ā
Cal started the day off a strong note, winning the varsity eight race with a speedy 6:11.901 finish. The Golden Bears jumped out to a quick lead in the first 500 meters and maintained their position, finishing first ahead of Stanford and Washington. The victory extended the varsity eight's undefeated season and marked the Bears' first Pac-12 title in the varsity eight since 2016.
It would be the only victory for the Bears, however, as the Huskies took the second varsity eight race. Cal finished third, less than a second behind Stanford.
The Bears also came in third in the varsity four, behind Washington and Stanford. This set up the all decisive third varsity eight grand final, with the Bears, Huskies, and Cardinal all tied in team points entering the final scoring race of the day. The third varsity race belonged to Washington, as the Huskies took a lead at the 500 meters which they did not relinquish and finished with open-water ahead of second-place Stanford and third-place Cal.Ā
Cal finished the day with a second place finish in the novice eight, the only non-scoring women's race of the day.Ā
The Bears will now focus on preparing for the 2019 NCAA Women's Rowing Championship, held May 31- June 2Ā at the Indianapolis Rowing Center. Cal will be looking to defend its title after winning the 2018 National Championship, and also claiming gold in the varsity eight and varsity four.
