Lots Of Work For Reserves In Final Open Practice Of Camp
Golden Bears Continue Preparation For Season-Opener Against UC Davis August 31.
BERKELEY – The final open practice of Cal's 2019 training camp Tuesday was a big day for evaluations as the Golden Bears' ran approximately 60 live plays during a scrimmage that featured many of the team's reserves after the starters had put in about 25 plays of 11-on-11 situational work in thud tempo earlier in the workout.
"It's thud tempo with them out there, but it was still some really competitive football on both sides," Wilcox said about the starters' work before adding that "it was cleaner overall [than last week's scrimmage] even when you add in the scrimmage with some of the guys with less experience that we were trying to get evaluated … The tackling has improved and you see some individuals making some plays on both sides of the ball, which is encouraging. It was a really big day and a good evaluation day for us."
Two of the players the Bears were evaluating – quarterbacks
Spencer Brasch (12-14-1-141, 2 TD) and
Robby Rowell (6-13-0-45, 2 TD) – each threw a pair of touchdown passes during the 60-play live team period that concluded the workout. Brasch connected with
Kekoa Crawford on an 18-yard touchdown for the first score of the scrimmage and later had a 25-yard scoring strike to
McCallan Castles. Rowell found
Alex Netherda for a four-yarder for his first TD toss before ending the scrimmage with a 15-yarder in the end zone to
Ben Skinner.
Castles (3-46, TD),
Trevon Clark (3-38), Crawford (3-37, TD) and
Marcel Dancy (3-19) each had a team-high-tying three receptions, while
DeCarlos Brooks had scrimmage highs of six carries and 34 yards rushing to lead the ground game.
The defense was credited with 8.0 sacks by forcing whistles while the quarterback still had the ball in the backfield and 13.0 tackles for loss.
Brett Johnson led the way with 3.0 sacks while
Colt Doughty,
Ben Moos,
JH Tevis,
Erick Nisich and
Gunnar Rask had 1.0 each. Tevis also had a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on his sack.
Cal begins its 2019 season by hosting UC Davis on Saturday, Aug. 31 (3:30 pm PT, Pac-12 Networks).
