Cal Beats USTA Juniors 8-4 In Scrimmage

BERKELEY – With an eye towards this weekend's competition, the California men's tennis team defeated a USTA Juniors squad, 8-4, in a Wednesday scrimmage at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears swept four doubles matches and split eight singles results to claim victory.
 
Today's match was a tuneup for the Bears, who will compete with other collegians plus the USTA Juniors in the season-opening Audi Napa Valley Tennis Classic. The tournament starts Friday and ends Sunday at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort in St. Helena, California.
 
On Wednesday at court one doubles, the pair of junior Jack Molloy and sophomore Yuta Kikichi – the 2019 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year – topped Cash Hanzlik and Logan Zapp, 7-5, with juniors Paul Barretto and Jacob Brumm beating Aryan Chaudhary and Stefan Leustian, 7-5, on court two. Cal got another 7-5 win on court four, with senior Dominic Barretto and junior Thomas Wright besting Hugo Hashimoto and Jack Anthrop. On court three, Cal senior Bjorn Hoffmann and junior Can Kaya claimed a 6-4 win over Samir Banerjee and Luke Casper.
 
With Cal leading 4-0 in the overall contest, the teams moved to singles. Paul Barretto beat Leustian, 6-1, 6-2, on court two, Cal newcomer Kent Hunter record his first win (albeit in a scrimmage) as a Bear with a 7-6(3), 6-3, result over Zapp on court three, Cal senior Mert Zincirli prevailed over Banerjee, 6-4, 6-4, on court seven and Kaya knocked off Hashimoto, 6-4, 6-4, on court eight.
 
Cal dropped four matches in singles, with Hanzlik edging Kikuchi, 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3, on court one, Casper beating Hoffmann on court four, 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, Anthrop defeating Brumm on court five, 7-6(4), 6-4, and Chaudhary topping Dominic Barretto, 7-6, 6-4, on court six.
