Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Cal Athletics

Cal Falls To Denver 1-0

BERKELEY - The California men's soccer team produced another game with 20 or more shots, though this time the Golden Bears were shut out, 1-0, by visiting Denver on Sunday at Edwards Stadium. Preston Judd scored in the 30th minute for the Pioneers. The Golden Bears earned a late penalty kick, but Denver goalkeeper Will Palmquist saved the spot kick in the 79th minute, as Cal suffered its first loss of the season.

Cal is now 3-1-1, while Denver has a 1-4-1 record.

The Bears had fared well at home early in the season, posting a 2-0-1 record before Sunday's game. In its previous two games at Edwards Stadium, Cal took 31 shots in a 2-0 win over American on Sept. 13 and took 25 shots in a 1-1 tie with UC Irvine on Sept. 1.

Cal outshot  Denver, 20-8, had a 10-1 corner-kick advantage and produced several good scoring chances, including in the fourth minute, when midfielder Francisco Perez had two shots blocked from close range. Cal earned a free kick from just outside the Denver box in the 31st minute, and the Bears sent the ball to just outside the six-yard box. In the ensuing scrum, Palmquist denied midfielder Jonathan Estrada from in close. Defender Ian Lonergan took a sliding shot in the 60th minute that was saved by Palmquist, who also stopped an Estrada effort in the 73rd minute.

Estrada led Cal with four shots, with all four shots on goal.

Cal's best – and last – chance came when forward Tommy Williamson was fouled in the Denver box in the 79th minute to earn the penalty kick. Taylor Davila took the shot, but Palmquist made the last of his five saves, and the Pioneers held on for the result.

"You can have some territorial dominance, you can have some goalscoring and chance dominance, but there are days it doesn't go your way, and today was one of those days," Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. "There were plenty of chances to not only tie the game but perhaps win it, and it just didn't happen."

The Bears begin Pac-12 Conference play when they host No. 3 Stanford on Friday at 4:30 p.m. in the Big Classico at Edwards Stadium.
