Bears Outlast Penn State In OT, 4-3

Cal Overcame A 3-1 Deficit In The Second Half

MANHEIM, Pa. - Competing at the home of USA Field Hockey at The Nook, California overcame a 3-1 deficit in the second half and defeated Penn State, 4-3, in overtime Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Bears' come-from-behind win snaps their five-game losing streak, and improves their record to 2-5 this season.

"As much as it came down to a couple of adjustments and a game plan, this game was really kind of a gut check," head coach Shellie Onstead said. "I really thought we were ready for it. We've fought really hard to the end of every game we've played. I tried to play that up, that we were ready on all fronts. We didn't panic when we went down by two. We hung in there and got those two goals back. We played really well as a team."

Femke Delissen posted three assists, including earning a helper on the game winner that was scored by Brynn Zorilla in overtime off a penalty corner. Fionna Jensen, Gabi Jimenez and Katrina Carter scored the other Cal goals.

Penn State (0-7) led, 3-1, in the third quarter before Jimenez and Carter tallied back-to-back goals to even the contest at three. Lindsay Mathison also picked up an assist on Carter's game-tying goal that occurred on a penalty corner.

Onstead kept her squad focused when the Bears went down by two. She knew the Bears just needed to get one back in order to get momentum back on their side.

"Psychologically, it's huge," Onstead said about the win. "We have a tough opponent tomorrow, so we have to dial into this next game, but to have this big win under our belt was tremendous."

Carter scored with just over 10 minutes left in regulation before Cal went into its first overtime game of the year. Zorilla found the back of the cage when Cal earned a corner in the first overtime period.

"I knew we'd be in an overtime game eventually this season," Onstead said "We haven't had time to work on overtime corners. It was a little bit like a sandlot football play where you drew it up on your hand in the huddle. They actually improvised off of it and it worked out great."

Natalie Dalton made eight saves, including six in the second quarter, and Delissen also garnered a defensive save. In addition to her eight saves, Dalton also came up big with a stop on a penalty stroke.

"Natalie saved a stroke, which was huge," Onstead said. "The save was a good save. It was a corner save, and a good call as far as the stroke goes. We worked on strokes in our practice this morning. I have the luxury of trying all three goalies. I could have subbed the goalie, but I didn't because she did well in practice today."

With her three assists today, Delissen now boasts 18 for her career, which ties her for ninth all-time at Cal with Onstead. Elizabeth Harkins is eighth with 21.

Cal gets right back on the field against No. 12 Delaware on Friday at 3 p.m. PT.
