BERKELEY – Junior midfielder/forward Emma West kept her goal-scoring streak alive as the Cal women's soccer team continued its hot start to the season, beating San Diego, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at Edwards. Off to its best start in five years, the Golden Bears (4-0-0, 0-0-0 Pac-12) were powered by a brace from Westin, who has scored in every game so far this season.
Luca Deza tallied her third goal of the 2019 campaign and Cal's defense held the Toreros (2-2-0. 0-0-0 WCC) to just one shut on target, as the Bears extended their shutout streak to four games in a row.
"We are all very pleased with the win as San Diego is a very good team who were capable of causing us all kinds of problems," said Bears head coach
Neil McGuire. "We scored three very good goals, and must credit the entire team for the shutout."
A warm and sunny day at Goldman Field saw the visiting Toreros get off to a strong start, with some promising play in the Bears' defensive half. However, Cal's backline remained organize and the Bears soon settled in the match, starting to dictate tempo and possession.
The Bears' patience paid off in the 25
th minute, when Westin tallied her fourth goal in four games. The Swedish international took a pass from Deza on the wing and cut into the box, beating her defender and firing a shot past San Diego goalkeeper Amber Michel. The Bears nearly added another in the 28
th minute, when they drew a free-kick right outside the box, but
Mia Corbin's strike was saved.
Leading at the half for the second time this season, Cal doubled its lead in the 62
nd minute, as Deza dialed up her third goal of the year. The junior midfielder, who scored a brace in Cal's season-opening win over Weber State, received a pass in the midfield from redshirt sophomore
Denae Antoine, then laced one into the back of the net from beyond the area. Antoine picked up her first collegiate assist and now has five points on the year (2 goals, 1 assist) while Deza has now eclipsed her goal total from 2018.
Despite the two goal deficit, San Diego kept battling and earned a free kick deep in the Cal area in the 69
th minute. The Toreros served a dangerous ball into the box, but Cal freshman goalkeeper
Angelina Anderson came off her line well to punch it away. Less than 10 minutes later, Anderson came up with a save on All-WCC striker Milan Moses, who got off a shot from inside the box.
The Bears capped off the afternoon with another goal from Westin in the 84
th minute, as the Swedish international scored off a beautiful strike from outside the box. Westin's two goals against the Toreros marked the first multi-goal game of her career and give her five goals on the season, matching her goal total from the previous two seasons combined. With a goal in each of her last four outings, Westin now has the longest scoring streak by any Cal player since Thailand international
Miranda Nild scored in four consecutive games during the 2017 non-conference campaign.
"I think I'm more confident this season in my ability to go at people and take shots," said Westin, who led Cal in assists last season. "As a team, we're patient and we're knocking the ball around. Our defense has been really good and hasn't let a goal in, so props to the backline and the whole team for playing so well defensively. I'm really happy with how we're playing so far."
The Bears outshot the Toreros, 9-6, on the afternoon and held a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Michel made two saves for the Toreros while Anderson finished with one save to improve to 4-0-0 in her collegiate career.
The Bears have now posted four clean sheets on the season and held opponents to a Division I best, two shots on target on the year. Cal's four-game shutout streak is its longest to start a season since 2017 and the Bears are one of only three programs in Division I soccer this season that have yet to allow a goal.
Cal was able to utilize its depth on Friday, with a total of 21 outfield players gaining valuable game action. With the win, Cal improves to 2-0-0 at home this season and has now won
The Bears will be back in action on Sunday, hosting Montana (0-2-2, 0-0-0 Big Sky) at 1 p.m. PT at Edwards Stadium. The Grizzlies played UC Santa Barbara to one scoreless half on Friday night before the match was suspended due to lightning and eventually called a no-contest after the on-set of darkness. Montana opened the 2019 season with a pair of ties, before dropping decisions to Washington State and Gonzaga.
Sunday's meeting between the Golden Bears and Grizzlies is a part of a series of games known as the Namesake Invitational.
