Bears Remain Unbeaten

Cal Pitches Fifth Consecutive Shutout In 1-0 Victory Over Montana

BERKELEY – Another game, another shutout for the Golden Bears. The Cal women's soccer team continued its hot start to the season, improving to 5-0-0 on the year with a 1-0 win over Montana (0-3-2, 0-0-0 Big Sky) on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Senior striker Abi Kim scored the game's only goal, converting a penalty kick in the 48th minute.

The Bears' defense took care of the rest, recording its fifth consecutive shutout victory. Cal has outscored its opponents by a margin of 13-0 and is one of only two teams in women's Division I soccer that has yet to allow a goal this season. Cal's five-game shutout streak is its longest since 2017 and marks just the third time in program history that the Bears have opened a season with five or more shutouts in a row.

"Today was a good team performance against a very well-organized and disciplined opponent," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "Any time you can go 5-0 with shutouts, you have to be pleased. There are things we can improve upon - we all know that and will continue to work together – but we really like what we're seeing so far."

Looking to build upon their momentum from a 3-0 win over San Diego on Friday, the Bears got off to a strong start, with redshirt sophomore Denae Antoine getting a shot on frame within the first three minutes of action. Antoine, who made her first start of the season, got a good look at goal, but Montana keeper Claire Howard was there for the save. Cal's speed and creativity continued in the early stages of the half, resulting in six corner kicks. Junior midfielder Whitney Davis, who made her first collegiate start, had a promising chance off one of those corners, but her header destined for the top corner was denied by the Grizzlies' defense.

Cal continued the dictate temp throughout the first half, outshooting Montana, 6-0, and forcing Howard into three saves. However, the Bears were unable to come up with the final ball and entered the locker room scoreless for the third time this season.

Yet, the Bears would not be denied for long, as Kim put the Bears on top shortly after the start of the second half. The senior speedster split two defenders with a run through the box and was brought down inside the area. The Bears were awarded the penalty, and Kim coolly walked up to the spot and converted for her first goal of the season.

Following the goal, the Grizzlies quickly looked to draw level, getting into the attack to test the Bears' defense.  Montana striker Taylor Stoeger made a dangerous run at goal, but Cal goalkeeper Angelina Anderson game off her line well to cut down the angle, and Stoeger put her shot off-target. Anderson, a freshman from nearby Danville, came up with another big play in the 60th minute, diving to her right to deny a shot by Alexa Coyle.

Anderson finished the match with two saves in the shutout victory while Howard had four stops on the day for the Grizzlies.

The Bears finished the day with a 16-5 advantage in shots and a 9-1 edge in corners.

Cal will now take its unbeaten streak on the road, facing off against UC Irvine at 5 p.m. PT on Friday. The Bears and Anteaters (1-5-0, 0-0-0 Big West) last met in 2017, when Cal came up with a 2-1 victory to open the season in Berkeley. Cal is 2-0-0 on the road this season, with victories at Santa Barbara and San Diego State.
