Cal Falls To No. 5 Stanford In First Leg Of The Battle Of The Bay

STANFORD - The fifth-ranked Cardinal proved too much to handle on Friday night, as Cal fell to rival Stanford, 73-40, at Maples Pavilion. The Cardinal (14-1, 3-0 Pac-12) extended their home winning streak to 14 in a row and handed the Golden Bears (8-6, 0-3 Pac-12) their third consecutive loss.

Cal trailed 39-15 at the half, and was held to a season-low 40 points on the night.

Freshman guard Jazlen Green led the Bears with nine points, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Stanford freshman Haley Jones  led all scorers with 17 points, going 7-10 from the floor.

Friday's game pitted Cal first-year head coach Charmin Smith against alma mater and former coach, Tara Vanderveer. Smith helped lead the Cardinal to three consecutive Final Four appearances from 1995 to 1997, and was an assistant coach for Vanderveer from 2004 to 2007.

"Obviously I don't like losing, but this was a very special day," said Smith. "It meant a lot to have a lot of friends and former players here tonight."

After taking a 5-4 lead in the early stages of the first quarter, Cal quickly fell behind. The Cardinal closed the opening quarter on a 16-0 run and led 20-5 after the first 10 minutes of action. THe Bears started to find their footing in the second quarter, but went cold again from  the floor in the third quarter, scoring a season-low three points and going 1-for-14 (7.1 percent) from the floor.

"We've got to be better for Sunday," said Smith, whose squad takes on the Cardinal in Berkeley on Sunday evening. "We didn't knock down shots and we got a little quiet in the second and third quarters. We found our fight late in the third quarter, so I was happy to see we got our fight back."

Cal outscored Stanford, 22-15, in the final quarter as the Bears connected on five of their six attempts from beyond the arc to close the game.

The Bears shot 27.3 percent (15-55) from the floor on the night while Stanford shot 46.9 percent (30-64) from the floor and 31.3 percent (5-16) from beyond the arc. The Cardinal outrebound the Bears, 50-29, just the second time all season Cal has been outrebounded.

The series now heads to Berkeley on Sunday, for a 5 p.m. PT showdown between the Bears and Cardinal at Haas Pavilion. Cal has won each of the last two meetings between the teams in Berkeley, highlight by an 81-80 thriller last season where senior Asha Thomas got her layup to go as time expired.

Sunday's matchup also serves as the official kickoff event for the 150 Years of Women at Berkeley celebration. October 3, 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the UC Regents' unanimous approval of a resolution by Regent Samuel F. Butterworth: "That young ladies be admitted into the University on equal terms in all respects with young men." The first women were admitted to the university in 1872, and the first woman, Rosa Scrivner, graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture in 1874. Throughout the 2020 calendar year, the University of California, Berkeley and Cal Athletics will be honoring the hundreds of thousands of women who have made contributions to the campus and beyond through their efforts as students, faculty, staff, coaches, and supporters. Chancellor Carol Christ and other campus and state officials will be on hand for Sunday's celebrations.
