No. 5 Stanford Holds Off Bears, 79-65

Game Kicked Off Campus Celebration Of 150 Years Of Women Attending Cal

BERKELEY – Less than 48 hours after its largest loss of the season, the Cal women's basketball team put together an inspired on Sunday afternoon before ultimately falling to No. 5 Stanford, 79-65, at Haas Pavilion.

Jaelyn Brown scored a team-high 14 points, her 11th double-figure outing of the season, while fellow senior Sara Anastasieska added 13 points and a season-high six rebounds to lead the Golden Bears (8-7, 0-4 Pac-12). Freshman Cailyn Crocker added 11 points as Cal found its regained its scoring touch after being held to a season-low 40 points in Friday's loss at Maples Pavilion.

"We wanted to come out and show that we're a better team than we were on Friday," said Cal head coach Charmin Smith. "I think we played with a lot more energy tonight. I think the effort level was a lot better and that allows us to be more competitive. We're learning, we're building, and we're growing it together."

Kiana Williams and Haley Jones scored 21 points each to pace the Cardinal (15-1, 4-0 Pac-12), who swept the regular season series with the Bears for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

Stanford led wire to wire, and jumped out to a 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinal gained early separation with a 9-0 run midway through the first quarter and built a 10-point advantage midway through the second period following a fastbreak layup from Jones. Yet from there, Cal staged a 9-2 run to draw back within three, keyed by five points from Anastasieska.

A redshirt senior from Sydney, Australia, Anastasieska finished in double-figures for the fourth time this season and the first since a 15-point outing against North Carolina Central on November 29. Anastasieska went 4-9 from the floor and a perfect 4-4 from the foul line, while also adding two steals and two assists.

Trailing 36-29 at the half, the Bears made it a two-possession game after a three-pointer by Anastasieska. However, Stanford responded immediately with a 11-3 run and maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.

Overall, the Bears had a season-high eight blocked shots, led by a career-high four blocks from freshman Evelien Lutje Schipholt. Cal also outscored Stanford, 18-4, at the free throw line, going 18-20 at the stripe, and held an 18-17 edge in points off turnovers.

Stanford excelled on the interior, outscoring Cal 52-20 in the paint and holding a 40-26 rebounding advantage.

Along with the on-court competition, Sunday's game also marked the official kickoff event of the year-long and campus-wide celebration of 150 years of Women at Berkeley. In October 1870, the UC Regents unanimously adopted a resolution allowing women to be admitted to the University of California, Berkeley. Throughout the 2020 calendar year, campus and Cal Athletics will be celebrating the women of Berkeley and the contributions they have made to the University and the world beyond. Chancellor Carol Christ, the first woman to hold the position at the University of California, Berkeley, served as an honorary coach for the Bears during Sunday's contest.

Cal hits the road next weekend, playing its first games outside the state of California since the opening week of the season. The Bears face a pair of steep tests, taking on No. 3 Oregon State Friday night (7 p.m. PT) in Corvallis before a Sunday matchup (2 p.m. PT) against No. 2 Oregon.
