Cal Falls At No. 8 Oregon State

Brown Leads Bears With 23 Points In Road Defeat

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Cal women's basketball team opened its road trip with an 81-44 loss to No. 8 Oregon State on Friday night at Gill Coliseum. The Golden Bears (8-8, 0-5 Pac-12) and Beavers (16-1, 4-1 Pac-12) were tied 17-17 at the end of the first quarter, before Oregon State took control with a pivotal 16-0 run in the second quarter.

The Beavers rebounded from their first loss of the season while the Bears remain in search of their first conference win.

Cal senior Jaelyn Brown led all scorers with 23 points, her highest-scoring performance ever in Pac-12 play. Brown matched her career best with four made three-pointers, and finished 7-for-16 from the floor.

Four different players scored in double-figures for Oregon State, led by 15 points from redshirt junior Destiny Slocum. The Beavers extended their home winning streak to 18 in a row, while Cal has now lost its last nine head-to-head meetings with Oregon State.

The Bears got off to a strong start on both ends of the floor on Friday night, holding Oregon State without a field goal for the first 5:27 of the game and connecting on three of their first six attempts from the floor. Brown went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc in the first quarter, including converting on a four-point play. She finished the game 4-for-7 from three and went a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line.

Freshman guard Jazlen Green poured in three points early in the second quarter before the Bears' offense stalled. Cal finished the quarter shooting 12 percent (2-17) from the floor, and were outscored 20-5 in the second frame.

The Bears felt the effects of foul trouble in the first half, with four players – Brown, Green, Alaysia Styles, and Leilani McIntosh – picking up two or more fouls in the first half. Oregon State held a 12-4 advantage in free throws in the first half and finished the game with a 13-8 advantage from the stripe.

Trailing 37-22 at the half, the Bears went shot-for-shot with the Beavers to open the second half. Brown scored or assisted on Cal's first 11 points of the quarter, and cut the deficit to 16 points with a pair of free throws. However, the Bears could not get any closer and were outscored by the Beavers, 21-7 in the fourth quarter.

Oregon State outscored Cal, 46-12, in the paint and held a 51-25 rebounding advantage on the night.

The Bears have now lost five straight, the last three of which have come against Top-10 opponents.

Cal continues its road swing on Sunday, taking on No. 6 Oregon at 2 p.m. PT at Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks (14-2, 4-1 Pac-12) have won 30 of their last 31 games at home and enter the week on a 12-game home winning streak. The preseason favorite to win the Pac-12, downed No. 3 Stanford, 87-55, on Thursday night at Matthew Knight Arena. Oregon has won three of the last four matchups with Cal, with the Bears' last win over the Ducks coming in Eugene in February 2017.
