EUGENE, Ore. – The Cal women's basketball team could not keep pace with No. 6 Oregon, falling 105-55 on Sunday afternoon at Matthew Knight Arena. The Golden Bears (8-9, 0-6 Pac-12) shot 39 percent (22-56) from the floor and 32 percent (8-25) from beyond the arc, but could not slow down the Ducks (15-2, 5-1 Pac-12) and their high-flying offense. Oregon shot 61 percent (42-69) from the floor and 59 percent (10-17) from three-point range in the wire-to-wire win.
With the loss, Cal remains in pursuit of its first Pac-12 win of the season while the Ducks remain tied for first in the conference standings. Oregon improves to 10-0 at home this season while Cal falls to 1-5 on the road.
Freshman guard
Jazlen Green led the Bears with a career-high 16 points, going 4-10 from beyond the arc. Redshirt senior
Sara Anastasieska added 15 points for the Bears, her fifth game this season scoring in double-figures.
Oregon's Satou Sabally led all scorers with 31 points, one of five players to put up double-digits for the Ducks. Senior standout Sabrina Ionescu had a 14-point, 10-assist double-double in the victory and moved into a tie with Gary Payton for the most career assists by any player in Pac-12 basketball history.
Coming off an 81-44 loss at Oregon State on Friday night, Green made her first collegiate start and got the Bears going in the opening quarter. The 5'11" freshman entered the game averaging 7.6 points per game on the season, but went off for 10 of her 16 points in the first quarter, going 4-for-7 from the floor and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Green added a career-high seven steals in the win, also chipping in two assists.
However it was not enough to contend with Oregon's hot start. The Ducks outscored the Bears, 31-14, in the opening quarter led by 13 points from Sabally.
Anastasieska carried Cal in the second quarter, scoring eight of her 15 points in the second stanza and going 3-for-4 from the floor and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Cal shot 56% from the floor and 67% from deep in the second quarter, but the Ducks capitalized on 12 turnovers by the Golden Bears in the opening half, which they turned into 19 points off turnovers. Cal committed 22 turnovers on the afternoon, their most in any game this season. Oregon held a 34-8 advantage on the afternoon in points off of turnovers and outscored the Bears 58-22 in the paint.
Anastasieska and Green combined for 13 of Cal's 28 points in the second half, while freshman forward
Evelien Lutje Schipholt grabbed six of her team-high nine rebounds after the break. Lutje Schipholt added three points while redshirt senior
Chen Yue added six points and dished out a career-high four assists in her fifth start of the season.
The Bears return to Berkeley for their sixth annual School Haas Rock game on Friday, January 24, hosting Utah at 12 p.m. PT. School Haas Rock brings youth from across the Bay Area to Haas Pavilion and incorporates educational components into the game day experience. Utah (9-8, 2-4 Pac-12) picked up its first win of Pac-12 play on January 12, prevailing in a 67-65 matchup against USC. The Utes are coming off an 84-69 win over Colorado on Friday night.
